Sure looks nice in there!! Cool

The wires should go between the intake manifold and the fan shroud, under the generator. There are little clips available to hold the spark wires to the fan shroud, away from the manifold heat. Sometimes they are white.

See the hole under the coil? That's for #3 and #4.

Nice work ladies.
You have done a fantastic job on your engine. And the car as well.

Regarding the engine. That little vacuum port on the intake manifold just below the carb flange needs to have a cap on it. Otherwise you're gonna have running issues.

Good Luck.

Make sure the fuel tank paint is compatible with gas. Test the paint on something going to the trash, after the paint dries see if it comes off with gas.

This is what I use, it's gas and oil resistant. I tested it with gas on a rag, the paint did not come off. It dries in about an hour.

I the first picture the distributor looks like it's not fully seated. Take the cap off and try to turn the rotor. Does it rotate? If so its not engaged in the drive gear.

And check the wiring at the distributor. You should have hot from the key to the + side. Also your choke and idle cutoff valve to the +. The condenser should be on the - side by itself, or a tachometer.

Also the coil wire doesn't look like it's engaged very well on the coil either.

Ok if the wires are right, and the point gap set, you should be getting a spark. Take one of the plug wires off and hold it next to the block somewhere and have someone crank the engine. Does a spark jump from the wire to the block?

Try a new coil or check the coil resistance if you are comfy with a Volt ohm meter

Ok time to break out the the volt meter. First check that you are getting 12v to the coil on the + side. Double check the wiring at the coil. Don't just dismiss this step because your "sure its right". Everyone messes up and hooks stuff up wrong from time to time.

If your getting 12v to the coil, again double check the coil wire. It doesn't look like it's right in the pictures. Take the wire off the distributor cap, and run the same test to see if you have spark that far.

Recheck the points gap.

Try another condenser. The new ones suck. Complete garbage. I ran through 3 of them in less than a year on a weekend driver. Now I'm using a old one stolen from a distributor core. No more issues.

Check your rotor. Did you forget to put it in? I've done that like 20 times after messing with the points..

Dwell should be around 48-50 degrees. Firing order 1-4-3-2.

Go through these steps, and let us know when you find.the problem.

Make sure your wire inside the distributor To the points isn’t touching any metal inside other than connector. If it grounds, no spark.

I used clear tubing when I started my eng on the test stand. Without fuel in the tubing and pump, it had a very hard time clearing the air. First take of the line from the tank at the pump, put it in a jar and blow air into the tank until the gas comes out into the jar. Then fill the carb with the squeeze bottle into the carb fuel line. Connect both fuel lines. That should be enough to run the eng for 30 sec or more, enough time to get all the air out of the lines.

If that does not work, try running line on output of fuel pump into a jar, crank the eng to see if fuel is coming out. DISCONNECT THE COIL WIRE TO TEST THE FUEL PUMP OUTPUT TEST!!!

Something may to be wrong with the vacuum distributor (keep the 009 for now), both types are the same at startup. Advance only comes on with RPM in 009 and vacuum when eng is running and it will run fine when not moving the Beetle. At startup wrong vacuum signal has no effect, only acceleration power while driving.

Yes, you are making progress. Keep the 009 for now and address the fuel pump/air in lines.
Be very careful with fuel around the engine while cranking, IF YOU SPILL FUEL WIPE IT UP, TAKE THE RAG OUTSIDE AND LET THE ENG DRY OFF BEFORE CRANKING.

I have an 009 on my engine and it works great, lots of power. Sounds like the air is not out of the fuel system or you have a bad fuel pump. I have a fuel pressure gauge at left of eng, something you could use to see if the fuel pump is working.

Keep up the good TROUBLESHOOTING!
