Taking a break from the stuff that requires deep thought and am chipping away at the thick paint oversprayed on various rubber parts.

Has there ever been a consensus of what is the best tape to replace the black stripe in the middle indent of the bumpers? I have cleaned them up and painted the insides and bumper supports. Now I just need a durable sturdy adhesive tape to dress up the middle.

Thank you,
Justin

Best is the rubber impact strip. Last I checked bus depot had some, problem is there about $80 a bumper. I am also curious what people have done.

We have a couple in town that do 'vinyl' signs. I had them cut me two black vinyl strips and they work very well. Hope this helps.

mort's solution should work well.

I used a marine-grade boat vinyl trim tape. Relatively cheap compared to the rubber strips, and has held up very well for 25 years on my '77's bumpers. Just make sure to clean off the indents with thinner or brake cleaner spray wiped on a paper towel to get any grease and fingerprints off before applying the tape.

Don't use black vinyl electrical tape because it shrinks/edges pull away after a season when exposed to weather.

X2- Best durable solution. And you can cut it down to exactly the width you need (slightly wider than 3M Super 33 electrical tape).

It also installs the way it should- with just enough stretch get it taught and straight- but with none of the hourglass tapering that happens when stretching electrical tape.

I was able to find original (1967) accessory bumper strips from Volkswagenwerks AG Wolfsburg for a very reasonable price (Damn Cheep!). I made a scan of what is left of the instructions. It is a horrible copy and I apologize in advance, but it does give the critical installation instructions. I will post a picture of the installed strips later.

Back in the ‘80’s, we just used black electrical tape.

I've used 3M 1080 and Vivvid vinyls on a number of interior/exterior vehicle wrap projects. These days with the tech improvements in these vinyls I would use them for a bumper strip accent as my first choice. An added benefit is that you are not limited to only using black color as there's a huge color choice if you want something different. I like the ability to post-heat the vinyl at corners and around edges to allow it to return to memory and really hug those edges well.

The 3M Super 33 will stay pretty nice for 5 years, or so if you don't stretch it out when applying it.

As I've had success with it in other applications, I would mask it off and spray it with black Plasti-dip.

Works fine for me. Super 33 is available at any Home Depot. If anybody gets real close and notices it is narrower than factory- they're too close to my car. Smile
