I picked up a set of deflector tins and the left rear air duct today. None of the classified or eBay listings seem to have the trio of "rear" cover plates.
I'd really like to know IF they can be installed once the engine is in. |

I don't know if you can sneak the tins in after the engine is installed.
Watch the video and see what you think.
Good luck

Target- you can remove everything on the engine without dropping the motor.
You'll have to get the valvetrain out of the way for the wraparound deflector tins. The left heater box and maybe fan housing too to get the small side tin.
I bought mine missing #27 (the right side) and it quickly burned 2-#2 pistons. _________________ I know the pieces fit, cos I watched them fall away.

Seat belt bolts are 7/16"x20, although somewhat close in diameter and pitch they will be making new threads and a mess as they go in. Valve adjuster screws are the #1 choice for air injection holes, same thread as the holes in the head, short enough to not reach into the port and no head to interfere with the tin.

Outstanding info. Those holes are a headache I got rid of with Len's help. _________________ I know the pieces fit, cos I watched them fall away.

These are specifically what you guys are talking about, yes?
https://www.amazon.com/Empi-21-2313-0-Valve-Adjusting-Screw/dp/B003KKQBNW
Judging by the crappy picture from the manual and the post... I think it's 011-13, 011-14, 011-15, 010-27.
Thanks. I didn't realize this forum had those sections.

That info will save me a lot of headache if I can't find those tins within the next week or so. Because I have a set of those tins on hand now, they're going in before the motor goes in so I won't have to worry about that.
27 is the piece that goes underneath on the front the passenger side cylinder tin, right? Just trying to make sure we're on the same page. |

011-13, 011-14, and 011-15 are easy with the engine installed and fully dressed, while 101-27 takes a bit of work.
You need 10x1mm valve adjusting screws, they would be for 76 and later Type 4 engines and for Vanagon Waterboxer engines. |

Alright. I appreciate the confirmation. I think I just sourced a 27.
And these appear to be the correct adjusting screws I believe.

How important are the little tinware bits that go over the pre-heat riser flanges?
Here's a rebuilt one without them, just holes poked through the main rear tin and pre-heat risers sitting on top.
Is that safe in the long run? They were originally there for a reason, no?
Asking because rebuilding my late bay without heating, but want to keep the risers, and there's no rear tin available that fits those criteria. It's either fully blocked (like above) or fully open (for both heating and risers).
Cheers guys and gals! |

Every little bit of warm air that leaks up from below goes directly through the cooling fan, warm air doesn't cool all that well, areas like that also allow road dust to be pulled in.
You'll either have to fashion some sort of covers or get the tin with the holes and block the heater holes. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Which deflector tin goes on which side? Driver side or passenger?

Good question since I couldn't readily find a photo in the Bentley or here. Mine's still scattered in pieces.
I think the one with the extension is passenger side. They'll only fit one way, the extension goes above the mechanical fuel pump. _________________ I know the pieces fit, cos I watched them fall away.

Thanks. That's what I concluded but I was able to shoehorn the other tin in that spot (somehow) which is why I asked. |

They will not line up if you try to install them on the wrong side, so you have zero worries. |

Is it normal that the two tabs on the block side of the tins don't even come close to lining up with the holes on the block? Only the center screw lines up. |

Maybe post a pic. This happens even when you switch it to the other side? |

Just lay one tin on the other and you can see that the holes do not line up.

The passenger side has the tabs off-center of the cylinder holes. When I first posted, I said the extension goes next to the oil cooler, then changed my mind.
Been a few years, plus they only fit one way as you found out.
We've all been there the first time. _________________ I know the pieces fit, cos I watched them fall away.

What is the name or part number for the little clip that holds wires along pinchwelds? Low-milage early bays I've seen have it holding the reverse light wire to the left side battery tray, and late bays use it to hold the double relay wires to the gas tank spigot aperture.
I can't find it on any fiche or search page…
