I'm an air cooled VW guy with a 66 Bug but checking in with this forum on how to value a Cabrio with very low mileage, below 10K!
From my rebuild a couple of years ago. Kept it a stock 1300CC motor. |

Put a new timing belt in the Cabrio & drive the snot out of it for 100,000 miles & enjoy not having to adjust/fix shit every weekend. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.
GOFUNDYOURSELF, quit asking everyone to do it for you!
An air cooled VW will make you a hoarder.
Do something, anything, to your project every day, and you will eventually complete it. |

Hmmm, you make a good point, but I’m asking for a friend and he’s getting up there in years...like many of us
...and you would replace the timing belt even with low miles?? |

It's a twelve plus year old cogged drive belt that keeps the pistons from kissing the valves, if you/they intend on driving the car AT ALL, then YES! If you/they plan on offloading the car then, NO, it won't increase the value enough to offset the cost of the service, the point of diminishing return.
It's next to impossible to give an idea of price without some idea of what condition it's in. Yes, it has low miles but has it been driven/started regularly? has it been in a garage it's whole life? Or has it been sitting under a tree inoperable in the back yard for the last 8 years? _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

That and it's not a very desirable car either. Yeah, I know, everyone is different, but it's certainly not collectable. |

I should say squared off cabriolet vs. the more rounded shape and the headlights only a Cabrio owner can love. |

What does that matter? If you are tying to get an idea of the value of the car that you initially asked about, post pictures of it instead of an ACVW engine. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I hate air cooled VW's, but it's a much better picture that any Cabrio.
Matter of fact, if there was an air cooled VW engine in the trunk of the Cabrio, that will substantial increase the value of the car. |

10k miles on a '96 Anything is not the same as 10k miles on Anything that's 20 or more years newer.
Also, valuing a car as a buyer is different than valuing a car as a seller.
If you're buying the car, deductions take place for lack of documentation, lack of road worthiness, electrical problems, etc. A car sitting still may need tires, suspension, timing belt, all new fluids. The top needs to be inspected, too, like raised and lowered a few times. And it gets a deduction in value if it's an automatic because VW automatics of that era weren't especially robust.
So, if the car presents itself nicely and drives like a 10k mile car should and the seller shows he/she took care of everything properly, it may be well worth spending $5,000 on it than spending half that or less on a lesser model. If the car or seller falls short, deductions in price become fast and furious.
If you're a seller or helping the seller, don't expect 10k miles to be its only selling point. You can't shout 10k miles to the world with an exclamation mark and then say it hasn't been started since the Bush administration and (oh well) the top is 22 years old, and still expect to get top dollar. At that point, it will be priced by potential buyers like any other '96 Cabrio and $2,000 may be a pipe dream. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

The owner of a 96 Cabrio, auto (too bad), red, black convertible top brought to a air cooled cruise on Saturday. It’s a unicorn. Looks like it came from the showroom floor. I think he should put it on BaT and see what the market will bring. |

These cars are great drivers but ....I love my 95 but It's not like anew car...I paid $250 and had to put a tyranny in. I drove it for 1 year with out reverse..(stick) ...builds character..made a circle in my yard...what are they worth? More in the spring n early summer..but I have a thing and I take turns with the two... Definitely a car undervalued right now..Good luck but don't give it away but somebody will love it..
Good luck
..Bill in Puerto Rico for winter VT the rest of the time.. |
