The previous owner came by yesterday to check out the progress & while he was happy that the Ghiapet is coming along, I could also sense a certain amount of regret. While checking it out, he told me that the main reason for discontinuing driving the beast was due to the right rear brake occasionally locking up (nope, not the brakeline Rolling Eyes), all he had to do is back up a bit & it would release.

Houston, we have a problem!

And the drum self-machined waay past it's limits Shocked .

Fortunately, all of this is getting replaced anyway...

After adjusting & bleeding, it now goes & whoas.

Thanks djkeev.

I took the Crusty Pig (one of my other projects) to the SEVWA Big Bug Shootout this weekend & while perusing the swap meet vendors I found a set of center caps (since the original Marathon caps are apparently made of gold. Rolling Eyes).
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So after seeing the price tags on the caps, I asked the vendor "Is that each or for the set"
Vendor "that's for the set"
Me "I'll take them, how much for that set of early painted hubcaps?"
Vendor "Those are original VW with original paint, not the reproductions, I'll take $70 each"
Me "No thanks, I'll just take the plastic ones" Confused

Cool

Soon, I’ll be bombing down the trails in the Ghiapet just like I did with the Crusty Pig.

That may be but that's what I've always called them. It's a lot of fun watching the sales people squirm as they look around nervously at the other customers when you ask them for a set of Genital Grabbers. Twisted Evil
It's even more fun when they accidently repeat it back.

Good sales people mirror and match their prospect, they should repeat and reaffirm for you. Very Happy
It is quite patriotic of you Chris, almost presidential. Cool

Them's Trump tires (or traction, take your pick).

Time for some more Ghiapet goodness. I finally got the other two tires mounted, balanced, bolted up to the beast.

Check it out, the bumper now stands a chance of touching another bumper before the nose does.

Everything just fits. Now I just have to pull the engine to swap for another until I can deal with the excessive end play (3/8"), replace trans mounts, & tie the frame horns into the body.

Thanks Darrel!

Since the Ghiapet is yard drivable, I haven’t addressed all the fuel system crap yet but it had other ideas. I had to charge the battery to fire it up & upon getting out to disconnect the charger for find this... a perfect little jet of fuel squirting over the top of the distributor cap. Shocked

So I shut it off and removed the old hose & inline filter & replace them with a section of Gates Barricade fuel hose.

that picture should be stickied to show why you move the fuel filter from that location.

So glad we didn't get a story about a bbq ghia pet. . .

Or at least as a good example as to why one should replace 20+ year old hoses.
