| My 70 bug will shift into 3rd and 4th gear but it is like it is in neutral. This problem happened at the same time after hearing a crunchy sound. Could this possibly be a linkage issue or should I go ahead and find someone to rebuild the transmission? |

Adjusting the linkage is free.
Try it first.

And check the shift rod bushing in the tunnel and the coupler under the cover under the rear seat. Checking those is free too.
