ohhh thanks guys

i guess ill stick with a modified 002 or 091 tranny if i can get same result! This will be my winter porject!!

I just bought a scangauge to plug on ODBD for rpm and instant mpg reading

I have a caliper stuck for now but ill keep on posting any improvement.

This week will be the cruise control installation, and well put more power on the chips on the ECU..

Very cool!

Did you use the Kennedy adapter?

I had heard there are fitment issues of the engine pushing in to the gas tank area. Did you have to deal with that?

I know your gearing isn't great, but any word on MPG?

ivee been to Canada West coast and back, only minor problem.. 12 000 km done..

Got 8-9 L/100km or 33 mpg on plane surface and my friend who own a stock 1979 FI 2.0L get 11L/100km

Quite a beast in the rockies.. only my stock tranny (002) that limit me to 80-85 kmh (3000 rpm=82kmh, 95 kmh =3600 rpm)

next step is a tranny from rancho performance and maybe a rebuilt of the engine

Really clean conversion, great job!

I'm not familiar with the VSS mentioned in your picture. Is that a cruise control or?

project on hold.. need a tranny and engine block...

my engine blew.. august 2010.. lucky it didnt happened 4000 km away haha

.. well, remember to tighten the turbo oil feeding to your engine .. distorded harmonic vibration broke my line and spilled my oil... engine is knocking now but in winter 2011 i have another case for it.. so will drop engine and put a rancho tranny in the same time..

VSS, is for ECU speed.. on a jetta/golf it on the tranny and convert speed from mechanical to electrical... so your cluster can read it.. ECU need to know the speed for whatever... i guess cruise also!!
since i wanted to keep my original cluster... i bought a scangauge... so my speed cluster dont work yet... but everything is on my scangauge.
its easier to get a Golf /jetta cluster fitted in your dash if you want speed read on your cluster and have no scangauge

Any updates to post? I'm getting geared up to do the 1.9 TD AAZ swap on my '77 and need all the info I can get. Right now I'd like to know what starter you used? You've done some really nice work on your bus. Keep up the good work!

There is a guy that advertises in the Samba classifieds an adapter plate he makes that allows the use of a TDI starter on a vanagon trans. Since the vanagon and late bus trans use the same starter, it will work on them as well.

I guess I should have posted that mine's an automatic. Anyone know of an automatic starter that can be used on a bus/diesel conversion?

Says it's available for manual and automatic applications?

UPdate.. new (used) engine put this summer, aand removed the tranny support on frame to get less vibration -- bad idea with the tork the 1st gear wobble at start ... ill put it back this winter.

Also reworked a bit the engine support.. WAY less vibration...

one of my friend have the same adapter + flywheel for sale! he was expecting to swap but sold his 1976 westy.. its for sale.. 450 $ CAD. I have it at my house , come and get it!!
the flywheel is from a 1600cc and its ok since you can get stageII or stage III clutch for less money in the 200mm

also upcoming, hydraulic clutch.. hate to get the foot on the clutch at the light with a stage II

Can you elaborate a bit on this?

I'm doing a TDI swap into a 78 Bus. We left out the tranny hanger and just made a very heavy duty rear hangar to hold the engine. I've heard that this works well. I'm hoping to have the bus running this week. We'll see!

(My long thread is here... http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=308793 and I'll be putting up much more photos and documentation in the next few weeks)

Not much since sorry

Last year i bought a 091 and installed it in, but since then the Bellhousing is larger,.. so need another starter.. i was thinking about modifying a vanagon starter ... but i guess in 2014, ill get the 002 tranny from Rancho with 0,700 ratio

Also removed all westy interior and got a 1976 deluxe westy... almost installed.

Im just thinking about swaping the AHU for an ALH ... i already have an ALH... but ive seem a few people went this way.. ALH is a really good engine!!

i'm inspired by this tread:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=517545&highlight=alh

Question and suggestion..

Question: Can you tell more about the "first gear wobble" that you had without the tranny hanger? (I'm troubleshooting some weird sound and suspect that may be part of the issue)

Suggestion: From lots of reading on TDIClub.. The 1Z/AHU is pretty comparable to the ALH. The ALH is superior in two ways - 100K mile timing belts and more upside on power for a highly tuned engine (i.e. more than 200hp). If you don't need 200 HP, then the timing belt is the only advantage. The down-side to the ALH is the vacuum pump at the back of the engine will want to hit the stock bus fuel tank. Workarounds include cutting out a piece of the tank or removing the vacuum pump. IMO I'd stay with the AHU Smile

End of 2013 update - Swapped the 002 tranny for a 091 tranny -- problem -- the starter does not fit anymore (shaft too short -- i should have swapped the bellhousing but forgot that!! (091 bellhousing is deeper)

Summer 2014 update - Bought a starter adapter her on the Samba and use a rebuilt T4 (eurovan) Bosch SR starter (2kw)-- start like a charm
-- begin the 1976 westy interior installation --- will be ready for 2015 Smile

Hope santa claus drop a Rancho performance tranny

Wishlist- for 2015
-move radiator under floor
-install a cabin diesel heater
-swap engine to ALH
-try to retrofit T4 rear disc brake
-a bigger garage haha

About the wooble, did not happen again since i swapped the tranny, i thing it was the tranny to engine getting loose nut, since there were loose when we did it

Still alive, me and my Bus

Went back last year on towing, IP pump leaked and the coolant rubber hose vanished.

Working on repair now and upgrade to silicone engine hose.

Wowiee! How have I never run across your thread?

If you read my (now gigantic) thread, you'll know I can empathize with things like engines and transmissions blowing up and cooling hoses coming apart!

I'm thinking about reworking my intercooler system. Can you post some more pics of yours?
