awesome! im interested in the drag link steering as well.. was looking at some pictures from jer fab and seems like it would be best for a air ride car.. are you going to notch the tunnel for the tie rod?

What I've seen is people add limiting straps so they don't raise the front up enough to hit, but I may have to notch it.

Also lift the gas tank up 3" and probably notch it as well.

Figuring it out as I go.

On the last page here I posted some photos:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8779652#8779652

I also pie cut the front 3/4".

I'm no expert at all, but that set up you posted for the rear doesn't mount to the frame at all. It installs to the body.

nice that looks good! did you have to drill out the spindles where the tie rods bolt to? im assuming they are/were tapered from factory? ya that rear kit ties into the torsion housing, the trailing arms and onto the frame horns.. doesnt mount to the body of the bug

I bought all new tie rods and a flip kit for the spindles. To install the flip kit you have to drill the spindles out with a 5/8" drill bit.

Once installed the first time I cycled the front up and down the toe out would change about 4"! Yikes. So I knew I needed the drag link. The link used Hiem joints with a 5/8" hole. So I just used 5/8" bolts.

I can go right back to the stock tie rods if I want.

BTW someone else who built a drag link told me they took it off because it got squirrely when raised up. I'm a ways off from driving my car so I can't really test it out.

good to know about the spindles.. ill be using heims as well.. and ya it seems like thats the struggle with air ride is finding a happy medium with the cycle changes and driving around.. but i figure when driving around for the most part ill be pretty low, and only air up high when going over a speed bump or steep drive ways so i dont think it should be to much trouble since i wont be driving at speed all the way aired up.. but like you said im still a long ways off from driving it so only time will tell.. a lot of people do it so it cant be to bad

also i got a question that goes back to the start of this thread about the motor size... the engine didnt have any numbers under the oil filler like most do.. but i did some digging and found some numbers under the heads... maybe it means something on the size of the engine? tried to look up vw engine codes but i was getting confused....

so at the start the number rears 17 VW Logo (has vw logo) then 111 101 102E and above that it has a AS 41... does that say anything about engine size?

Does the block say made in Mexico? I think AS-41 is a replacement block.

Well not "Made in" Mexico, but:

I don't think they were all made in Mexico, some say Brazil.

The AS41 means the block is 4% Aluminium and 1% Silicone.

def didnt say anything like that.. it just had the numbers only.. AS41 was by itself above all the other numbers
