I bought an engine in a box last week. H5591488 . It's torn apart but looks like it's mostly there in boxes. Crank looks good. Not scored or rusty. Digging around in the boxes I found a good thermostat with rod and the shroud still has the vanes and linkage including the cable that runs to the air cleaner. All good German tin. Something that sat on a shelf for 25 years.
For $50.00 I couldn't pass it up.
Can anybody identify this bearing manufacturer? I searched and searched and didn't find the logo anywhere but a Saab forum. Is it Mahle?
thanks;

Looks like the Glyco logo stamped on the bearing. Glyco was a supplier of bearings and seals for VW. Haven’t seen much T1 stuff, but I know they supplied cam bearings and flywheel main seals for T4 engines. They were good stuff. If original and they measure good, they are keepers. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

If it has a VW logo, it is an official VW part.
The crank is from a 1600 |

Hmm. Well I bought "VW engine parts" so I guess I just assumed all of them came from the same engine. The guy I bought them from was helping out a friend of the family clean out her garage of her late husbands stuff. There were vintage Chrysler parts in the boxes too. And a neat oscillating valve lapping tool. Also a vintage hand held spotlight that plugs into a lighter socket.
Would the 1500 crank be a better item? They aren't cross drilled are they? I used to know this stuff.

Right. The single drilled cranks are better for making strokers.
Not much difference otherwise. |

I enhanced the contrast a bit to bring out the logo stamped in it. It confirmed my suspicions. Yep, most certainly a Glyco bearing.
Nice find!

Today I sorted through some of the parts that came with this 1500. Sure enough the crank is cross drilled. As Modok saw from one blurry picture.... Unless... did any 1500s come with cross drilled cranks?
I guess that ends my hope that this was a virgin engine. Untouched since new.

I think the pressure plate and engine tin would be correct for a bus, but the airfilter is for a bug. Not totally sure, maybe others can confirm. |
