I have a 1973 standard Beetle that the speedometer face appears crooked. It looks like the face has slipped, but I've been told that the face is not separate. Anyone know how to "straighten" it? Thanks

There should be 2 small screws holding the face to the body. You can see the holes either side of the needle. _________________ Glenn

It appears the two retaining screws are missing, one on each side of the needle center just below the gas gage.
See link to ad showing the screws in place...

you will need the screws, probably difficult to get the correct ones that look right. then you need to carefully pry off the bezel, remove the glass and install. The bezel is tricky, great care is needed on removal and install so as to not mare it, distort it. at factory it was machine installed, with the edges rolled over to secure it. Use care else you will see ugly distortions on it.
do NOT touch the face once apart!!!!! the painted markings may easily come off, fingerprints WILL show up, and it you try to clean them, you will likely leave marks where you wipe. suggest cotton gloves when handling the face to keep it clean. you may blow off dust with a duster aerosol can it need be, and over course clean the glass well on the inside before install.
you may have to buy another speedo to obtain the screws, the want ads have speedos. search both for speedo and speedometer, as they are posted both ways.
Good Luck, Bug On with great looking instruments! _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

Thanks for the replies. Next question. I bought the Bug brand new in 1973 and have never had the speedometer removed or worked on. How did the screws disappear, and where could they be? I would think they would have fallen to the bottom that you could see through the glass. Just wondering. Not a mechanic. |

Take it out and clean it up. Those later model speedometers have plastic facing that deteriorates with time. I do sell replacement glass for it. It is safety glass. It'll take the dull look out of it. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

If never apart, the screws should be in there, perhaps hidden by the inner bezel? remove the speedo and shake it, if in there they will likely rattle.

Thanks for the help, Everyone. The plastic still looks good. Not sure if it will when it's removed. I thought the screws should still be inside, but can't see them. I'll post again when we get it fixed. |

Got the speedo fixed. Y’all were correct. Only the screws were out. Guess 45 years of vibrations worked them loose.
