I'm looking at a sandrail for sale and I need some help diagnosing an issue at the tranny. This is an 091 matted to a type 4 vw aircooled engine, all stock. It makes some bad sounds right when the clutch begins to engage in first gear. Clattery clankidy . Some say "throwout bearing" others have varied oppinions so I thought I would ask here. Tranny seems fine all around. Only acts wierd right when engaging in first gear, then drives fine , shifts fine. Any input is appreciated. Thanks. |

A bit hard to diagnose by the description given. Does it make the whole car shudder on engagement or is it just a sound? If just a noise I would say the disc hub is coming apart. If is shakes the car you need to regrind the flywheel, pressure plate and buy a new disc.
Both ways the clutch needs to come apart to investigate. Not a difficult job. |

Could simply be missing bowden tube...

I am new to all of this and as far as I know , the bowden tube is basically the cable from the clutch pedal . This rig has a hydraulic clutch. Does that still utilize bowden in some way ?? |

ya needed to say that rather than "all stock"
so with that now known, a couple other things:
I'm no expert on hydraulic clutches but I would clear the system and replace the fluid, bleed and readjust.
The disk/pressure plate could be at fault, oily or just worn out
Transmission mounts can still cause the issue. _________________ '56 pan Dune Buggy since '69
