|
Hi
I have an 091 bell housing that I want to build into my bench run rig .
I seem to have a pile of bug starters, which have a shorter throw out .
Is there anything I can lash up to make it work ? It's only for bench running so doesn't need to be perfect !!
The gear misses the flywheel by mm's.......a few more mm and it'll work ..
I don't want to spend ukŁ150 on a 091 specific starter.
Any hacks ?
cheers

Find someone to swap with, your 091 for their 002 bell housing. |

Both mcmscot and busman78 have correct answer(s), anything else will just cause you grief.... The 091 is only odd duck in very big pond....

Think the amount of about 1/4 inch was mentioned at one time...

You would have to machine off 10mm for an earlier starter to connect with ring gear.
I looked at doing it, but it gets very thin and you may have to do some welding to build up the area before you machine off the surface.
And NO a automatic starter does not have enough throw for it to connect either.
Either find a 002 or modify a Bug trans to fit your application, it will be cheaper. _________________ Joseph

Won't work.... Starter sets to far forward to contact flywheel... But auto trans starter will work with 002...

late model VW buses had automatics, the automatic starter for 76-79 will bolt right onto that 091 bellhousing and work with any 12V flywheel from 200mm through the 228mm |

No, did not miss it, starter for the test rig do not have to be new, just another alternative part that may be obtained used at a decent cost. |

Busman, Have you tried using a starter for an automatic with in an 091 bell housing?
I, have and it does not have enough throw to work. _________________ Joseph

No, but sold quite a few back in the day from stripped buses to the sand buggy owners who were hot to trot to get them. I have always had a good supply of regular starters, if the the automatic starter will not work then I apologize for the suggestion and revert back to my original suggestion of just swap for a 002. |

I for one can confirm JS is correct as I just went through this on an 091 with 091 bell housing and it did not work. I had always thought it would work also, but it did not have enough throw and I had to use a standard 091 starter. _________________ HRE in Westerville,Ohio

Yep 091 starter, $64 is reasonable, plus $40 core, the shipping to the UK would be kinda pricey |
