|

Working on my brakes this last week I come across this issue that I couldn't find much info on, so thought I would share it.
The rear brake shoes on my 79 had the E-brake lever riveted on to them instead of using the standard clip.
Shouldn't be mush of a problem, but the rivets actually have a shoulder on them with the levers having a larger hole than a standard clipped on lever
No luck finding a piece of tubing to make a shim, so I ended up center drilling out the old rivets, grinding them down, and using them to sleeve the new pins.
Seemed to work well. One question, of the 3 possible places you could put the wavy washer, is this the correct 1? (Between the shoe and the lever)

Nice work!, especially the redrilling to make a sleeve, I would have called the FLAPS myself for some fresh pins.
The wavy washer is best under the head of the pin, it keeps the lever pressed against the shoe and prevents rattles, lots of Never-seeze on all the moving joints of course. Leave the washer where it is until you are in there next time, it won't make a whole lot of difference as is. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

rebuilt shoes often are often presented with a pounded rivet instead of a horse shoe. Nice work. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Just wanted to say thanks for this post. My worn out shoes are riveted as well. I now know I might have to make sleeves out of the old rivets. _________________ '75 Riviera

Hope it's ok to revive this thread...
I have shoes with the levers riveted on. I picked up new shoes and the pins with washer and clips. The holes were the same size, so I didn't need the 'shoulder' as discussed earlier, however the pin is considerably longer than the original rivet and when the clip is put on, it just barely stays on and I can see it falling off quite easily once things start moving. Do they make shorter pins that would tighten things up? Or is there some trick to make the clips stay put? _________________ 1977 FI Westfalia |

They make shorter ones.
Depending on how long they are you can use wave washers under the head of the pin or stack washers next to the clip. |

There are decent E clips at any serious hardware/fastener store too.
I would let the arm work directly against the shoe, but whatever provides
decent feel/bite at the handle is what matters most. |

Ok, so it is tension on the pin that keeps the clip in place. I'll try a washer or two. _________________ 1977 FI Westfalia |
