My '70 has developed a leak, from the clear plastic line that runs from the under-dash filler reservoir to the reservoir on top of the master cylinder. I added fluid to get home, and the leak got worse so I went under to investigate. It was coming from where the line clamps to the master reservoir. The clamp was tight, and I took it off to find no cracks on the line or the reservoir. I cleaned it up and replaced the clamp. It leaked very little, so I drove it and watched the level, which now only dropped a few millimeters. I'm wondering, how it can be leaking with a tight clamp and no cracks? Also, the line appears to be wider at the ends, not a flexible "bulk" line. Is this a common problem? Even when the leak was at it's worst, it only drained to the point where the master cylinder res. was still full and there was a centimeter on fluid left in the under-dash one. I've been driving it and watching the level until I can figure it out.
Another question: Out of all the parts suppliers, who is usually the fastest to ship? I need a pedal rebuild kit, and maybe that plastic line, but in time to fix everything and get the Bus inspected next Saturday, as I'm hauling as many people as we can cram in to go to a concert. Everyone wants to ride down in the Bus _________________ '69 Beetle, '69 Beetle Convertible |

The end of the line is probably hardened and cracked although you may not be able to see the cracks. The line should be one size all the way but the end is probably stretched from being on the fitting so long. Replace the line and you should be good to go. Also for NYSI make sure you get a safety only inspection. It will be $10, not the $21 for the safety emissions....anything over 25 model years old in NY state gets the cheaper inspection. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

Where's the concert you're going to? The June Jitterbug in Niagara Falls is next weekend you know....I'll be heading up, probably in my '71 Westy. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

I should just replace that line then I guess. It seems too hard to be flexible, probably just really old and formed. I'm going to Tom Petty at Darien lake, I'm trying hard to make it to Jitterbug since I've went pretty much yearly since before I could even drive. Work is screwing me If I can work it that will pretty much be the best weekend ever _________________ '69 Beetle, '69 Beetle Convertible |

Well...you seem like you may be "coming down with something" so you may have to stay home from work that day. They'll understand. I usually spend the whole weekend up there, but this year I already have plans to go to Enchanted Forest with my girlfriend's neice's school on Friday, so that blows getting there Friday night. I'll be campin at the Campark Resorts on Lundy's Lane....bunch of people are camping out there so if you can make it, look me up!! If there's anything you need for your Bus, I have a couple of parts Buses here, let me know and I can bring it with me. I'll most likely be in the '71 Westy: (the blue one at the end of the driveway)

That plastic line is only available used, it was NLA years ago.
But I really doubt it is the line. It probably just needs a new rubber sleeve.
#59 here: http://www.ratwell.com/technical/Microfiche/t205100.gif
The sleeves are part #211 611 833C. They are available from VW if they will order them for you......
The line is #56.... it was part number 211 611 805E

Interesting thread.
I had this problem and fixed it by wrapping a load of plumbers PTFE tape around the spigot on the resevoirs (top and bottom). Couldn't face the prospect of trying to source the sleeve part !
I can't guarantee tha the tape is brake fluid-proof but it has held out for a couple of months now.
BTW whilst down there I noticed my brake m/c was leaking quite badly.
As 1970 m/cs are one maybe two year only and hence expensive (> 150 USD) I managed to buy a seal kit direct from a UK seal manufacturer called Nelson Stokes Ltd. You can find them with google and it only cost 10 quid (that's pounds sterling) which is their minimum order value.. I hope this helps some others.
Cheers
