So I pull the right carb/intake, and I have this thought...

I'm new to air-cooled VW's, so there has to be a word for this.

But I suddenly realized it would be so much easier to work on the engine if it were out of the car.

Based on my knowledge of 1980's movies, this car was involved in some kind of "Snobs Vs. Slobs" event.

Your best bet would be to separate the body from the pan. Based on what I see you have a full gut and rebuild job ahead of you.

There is NOTHING worse than trying to fix wiring while the body is on the pan. Plus refurbishing that tired motor and pan will be SO much easier with the body off.

Well, with the weather getting colder the motivation to go out to the garage is getting lower.

But not gone.

Got the engine on a stand.
Working on getting the tins off. The screws aren't wanting to come off.
Aside from the Dan Savage method of Patience & Lube, any tips for removing stuck tin screws?

Bad news / good news: the thermostat is F'd / who ever put it together knew enough to use a thermostat.

The snow is retreating so it's time to get back into the garage.

Of course as soon as I get the wheels on it, I'm jacking it back up into the air.

(Don't worry, there's a jack stand. It's being blocked by my giant head.)

My friends hipster obsession with tobacco pipes has proved useful.

I used his pipe cleaners to get the shmutz out of the cooling fins.

That's not heater hose, that's old double weave AC hose, look how thick it is inside the cloth weave. Heater hose is barely thick enough to cover the cloth
