Very nice Tim!
Tell me, is the sheathing over your high tension leads for abrasion resistance, heat protection or to prevent them touching each other?
Also, is that a cooking thermometer in your dipstick hole, or can you buy an analogue temp probe?
Cheers,
Phil

Hello, Phil.

I hope the weather in Scotland is nice. Here, we’ll be up to 103 F in a few days.

Concerning the sheathing on the spark plug wires, I used to be 180 degrees out on my old distributor. So, when I installed the plug wires, they were routed funny and touching each other. I had an NOS Mexican Bosch SVDA 034 distributor and installed it and found out the distributor drive was not out 180, but the actual drive on the end of the distributor itself. Anyway, after switching distributors, I just left the sheathing on because it wasn’t hurting anything, and it does prevent any abrasion on the left side of the engine where I’ll eventually route the 3 and 4 wires in the slotted tab on my shroud.

In the meantime, I had wcfvw69 (Bill) restore my old German Bosch 034, and he reinstalled the drive properly. But I’m keeping that as my spare now, although I ran it in a friend’s Karmann Ghia to show him how much better a good 034 was compared to his 009.

The thermometer is an expensive—but very accurate—one that is made exclusively for VW engines that don’t have a downdraft blowby pipe, emanating from the oil filler. I paid $69.00 for it a few years back, from Aircoold.net. Today, the price has risen to $84.95. Although the price was high then, and it’s gone up, I’d still buy one (Actually, this is the kind of item I tell my wife about when she asks what I want for my Birthday, or Christmas) because it’s so precise.

A good alternative is the Save My Bug dipstick. It’s a drop-in affair that hooks into your existing oil warning wiring at the oil sensor in the engine compartment. When the oil gets too hot, it flickers the oil warning light at the dash, warning you to slow down. If the light stays on steady, you pull over and investigate.

Tim

Just got her back from a 3 year restoration with bits and bibs from all over the globe... will post up the story behind it separately.

Some of these engines look like "just left the factory" !!!

Not mine though !!! That's never been a priority to me, as long as the VWs run great. So here are mine.
1600cc DP in my 1970 sedan (mine since 1972). Solex 30/31 on adapter, German 009.

1835cc DP in my 1971 convertible (mine since 1976). Weber 40DCNF, German 009. Tin gets painted black next time engine is out - but I've said that for a decade and no reason to remove engine...

Nothing quite as fancy or nice as the rest, but pretty happy with my first time. Still a work in progress
