The Early Bay rear backing plates up to chassis #210 2300 00 have the part numbers 211 609 439 /440 D. However the plates up to chassis # 218 109 823 were in fact different as shown. Something to be aware of when sourcing replacements.

im having this problem now looking for some 68 backing plates

there is a mod you can go apparently which is somewhere in the VW workbook but I can't find it anywhere.

looking at that image it looks pretty simple, just take the centre flange thing out which I assume will be a machine shop job..

Ya it looks like you could take a cut off wheel and cut off that piece of the late 68 backing plate that rides in the "V" in the early 68 drum.
