Working on a rail. No idea what the engine is in it but the numbers on the block cross to a 1500. Has dual port heads and a Dellorto carb. Was starting hard and pinging at high RPM. Put a timing light on it and it was at 48 degrees at RPM. So I figured the timing mark was off, found TDC and the mark is right on. So I backed total advance down to 30 degrees.
My question is assuming this engine is not stock, what is the maximum allowed timing? I'm assuming it's not stock because it runs better than my stock 1600.

For a 009/clone 28-30 at 3500 rpm. If distributor has a vacuum can then this may not be accurate. _________________ My cut in half and rebuild thread

You didn't note which distributor this is? Vacuum/mechanical or just mechanical. Either way, I'd time it to 30* with all mechanical in around 4k rpm. If it's vacuum/mechanical, do it the same but unplug the vacuum hose and plug it. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Been out of town. I set the timing at 30 degrees at 3,000 or thereabouts.
Took it out and it runs good, starts a lot easier, no pinging. The distributor is a 009 or clone, no vacuum advance. Wish it had it.
Thanks guys, off to the next problem...
