Why are the stock front brake pads "short"? The pad only engages the outer 1/2 the rotor which seems weird. The caliper piston engages the front pads w/ a bit of an overhang which makes it obvious that longer pads can be used.

Anyone have a source of stock sized front brake pads but 1/2" longer to engage all of the front rotor?

Can you post a pic? It sure sounds like the wrong pads are installed.

Did a quick web search and found this picture. See how the piston hangs beyond the edge of the pad? It's exactly like this.

The pad can be 1/2" longer which will use most of the surface of the rotor...

Based on this picture your pads are too short.

What year and model do you have? There was a size change around '72.

I have a 64. But I believe the calipers are from 66-71.

Even the local VW specialty shop has rebuilt calipers with pads like the picture I posted. Wonder if the pads for the later model type 3's will fit...

Perhaps I have type 1 calipers. Anyone know how I can check without taking off the caliper and measuring the piston diameter?
