Driving home last week started to experience shifting issues. I was having a hard time finding and getting it into first and second. Kind of felt like I did not have enough clutch. Got home adjusted clutch cable, now it is almost to it's maximum. Also tried to do a minor adjustment to shift plate. While under Bus checking everything I found the linkage coupler was in bad shape Today I installed new one. Now here is the issue : With motor off goes into all gears no problem. With engine running won't go into first and second and grinds a little into reverse. Clutch is stiff and engages very near top. All help appreciated !!

You will need to readjust the stop plate.

Check the free play
Clutch Free Play

The pilot bearing may be bad and spinning the trans input shaft, even though the clutch is disengaged.

Good luck

Pilot bearings tend to fail suddenly. One minute they are fine the next minute they cause hard shifting. They can also lock up totally making it where you not only can't shift but the car will keep trying to move forward with the pedal fully depressed.

pilot bearing or clutch. As Confucius says, there is an engine removal in your future that could involve anything back there including the cross arm. You own VW bus - enjoy. You will like or get rid of if you not like.
