What oil pump should I use on my 2.0 engine. It' a 79 with factory hydraulic cam and lifters. Previous owner installed an aftermarket melling pump but I can't find anyone that sells the FRONT gasket behind the front cover plate. I hear the factory pump is only available through the dealer and expensive. Any one have any advice for me? |

I'm also wondering if anyone has used BD's pump http://www.busdepot.com/021115107ak ?
Or, eVWparts rebuilt one https://www.evwparts.com/vwparts/Type4OilSystem/021115109A.html ? _________________ 78' Dakota Beige Westy. “Skills” EJ25 engine conversion w/ zero mile factory short block, Delta 1000 cams, heater core and modified Gilmore AC. Whatever pump you use, make sure it fits snug.
I would go with the fancy German pump linked above (which is what I use), or find a gasket for the Melling. I’m pretty sure they take a standard type 1 gasket which you can get anywhere. Use the thin one for the cover plate and the thick one for the pump to case. _________________ 1977 Westy, Automatic. Big Valve heads, CS Cam. |

Biggest problems I see with aftermarket T4 pumps, is the body is often 0.001” or even 0.002” undersized. Poor fit. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

I'm using the evwparts rebuilt oil pump and haven't had any issues with it in about 10k miles.
I decided to go with the evw stock pump after test fitting a Melling, Schadek and Empi that were a little loose in the case bore. They were under size by .0016-.002". I'm kind of curious how well they might have worked. Is anyone using a Schadek or Melling pump in their Type 4? Both had larger gears than the stock pump if I remember correctly.
I was concerned that the extra clearance between the case and bore might contribute to low oil pressure at hot idle, which seemed to be a problem that a couple of people were having with new rebuilds at the time.
That Adv Performance new pump looks very interesting. Anyone know how much those go for? |

ANY rebuilt pump is a crap shoot unless it has been milled to tighten it up by a good machinist. And, new Melling gaslets exist because someone here landed one last year from Melling. Have to search for the thread. FWIW I asked the shop you bought the rebuilt pump from what they did to then when they rebuilt them, and could not get any answers. In my eyes that means what you see is what you get. A good rebuilt pump would be spec'd to see the clearances, then milled to tighten up end play. I went thru 10 or 11 used T4 pumps to get 6 or 7 that were good enough that Phil could mill them back to factory specs. They are all gone. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

This should get you started:

This topic comes up a lot, so you will find a lot more. I got a "rebuilt" pump from Mofoco. I don't know if they did anything other than check that it was good, but it was the best of the 3 I was able to get at the time and was reasonably priced with no core charge. |

Just to follow up on this, I just got off the phone with EMW and they are selling a Schadek 26mm that is modified to fit correctly in the T4 case.
What they do is cut down the OD of the housing and press fit a sleeve of 6061 around that. Then they cut down the sleeve to the exact correct outer diameter and drill the ports.
This solves all the problems. You get slightly higher pump output from the 26mm gears and a perfect fit with no leakage.
He is shipping me one now.
