That would be a huge coincident. |
Mr. Lang,
I wish I could claim it was you, but no, we were in Rheinland-Pfalz when we saw them. The Blue & White, on some smaller highway in-between Meisenheim and Idar-Oberstein on Saturday, April 21st, and the Orange Double-Cab on the 22nd, on our way from Meisenheim to Bad Kreuznach.
Perhaps the next time we're in Germany we will have the chance to see yours too!
Oh, and by the way, I LOVE your camping set-up with your bus!

BUSES.
This coming weekend is "Bus City" along the Russian River (near Guerneville) in California.
Friday May 18th through Sunday May 20th, 2018.
It is a camping meet of any and all VW buses (all years, including Bay, Vanagon and even Eurovans if you have one).
The Campground where it is held opens up one-week early just for this event, and it is a beautiful grove of redwoods in a well-maintained place.
We went last year, meeting up with our Sacramento diesel Vanagon Westfalia friends, and enjoyed it immensely.
The link of it is on the forum/site: "VW Camper Family"
Here's a direct link to the details:
https://tinyurl.com/ycorkywf
No reservation needed, so I hope that if you have next weekend free in California that you'll make it.
It'd be great if the split buses could out-number the Bay and/or Vanagons.
A picture from last year:
If you're already going, or you do suddenly make it, be sure to drop by our campsite and say hello. _________________ ----------------------------------------------------------

I'd love to go, but going to save my money for Bug-O the weekend after. Bug-O won't be at Sac Raceway much longer, and Bus City is crazy expensive, for what they are asking, I doubt I'll ever go.... _________________ -Adam

I get it... I too think it is pricey (we HAVE to share a site, or likely wouldn't go). We'll miss you though...
The Toaster is anxiously waiting to leave (or that's just me).

"Bus City" - 2018
We had a great time again this year at Bus City.
Volkswagen folks are always so friendly, and camping with only VWs is a great thing to do...
Had a great many conversations, story swaps, and just generally a lot of fun.
Wish I had the chance to meet everyone, but there's always next year...
There were more Split Buses then I actually managed to get photos of, but I'll put a few of the photos I did take below.
Naturally there were a great many of Vanagons too...
A couple Eurovans also made it out, and several Bay Windows...
There were more than 40 buses (I believe) of all possible years at Bus City this year.
Less than a quarter-mile from the campground is the Korbel Champagne Cellars, where there are free tastings and a free hour-long tour (which also has a free tasting).
This meet is family/kid friendly, as well as pets.
Here's our Sacramento Vanagon Diesel enthusiast friend's sweet 1-year old dog checking out The Toaster:
VWs, fondue in the woods, steak, friends, swimming in the river and just relaxing. Another great VW weekend.
Here's a search which has additional photos that we took:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_search.php?search_keywords=Bus+City+-+2018
We hope even more split buses can make it next year... I think we almost outnumbered the Bays. _________________ ----------------------------------------------------------

Is that you in front, next to Blue Barrel?
I can’t see a unique mark like your right rear panel resto, though. _________________ .ssS! |

Yep; that's us at:
BUGORAMA #81
Sunday, May 27, 2018
Sacramento Raceway Park
Sacramento, California
It was a great event as it always is, and thankfully never got above 89 degrees this year.
Another great perk is that they finally had additional food trucks instead of just the Raceway vendor, so Kathy and I could enjoy some street-style tacos instead of the peanut butter and jelly we had brought along.
Here's The Toaster enjoying fine company:
Bugorama always has a lot of variety in style for VWs, from stock to custom to what were they thinking?.
Here's a great example of that with an incredible paint job and customization:
The drag races, if you don't mind the sun and heat in the bleachers, are amazing to watch.
Myself, I find the swap/parts market to be fascinating at Bugorama.
Everything; good deals, bad deals, rare parts, common ones... it's all there.
Here's a photo (uploaded by Everett) of a middle-seat.
Any guesses how much they wanted?
$2,500 OBO.
In the car display area this year, I was surprized to see how many of the cars had signs stating that they were for sale (there's also an area just for cars that are for sale).
Kathy and I enjoyed talking to a large variety of people, and catching up with a lot of folks that we know, have known and/or had previously only known via The Samba.
Like most all meets, it's a great chance to talk VWs all day long with so many different folks and hear their stories.
Typically I can't pick a "favorite" auto at a meet, but this year this amazing 1950 postal bug really got my attention.
Kathy had the opportunity to talk to its owner at length and he had some amazing stories about this, and other VWs that his family has had over the years.
...but to buses...
...Everything you could imagine (almost).
This perfectly restored SO-42 won an award, I believe:
This smashed bus (somewhere, somehow, at every angle) fascinated me.
It is street legal and drives.
...and many VWs that are just, well, wonderfully someone's dream car:
Gotta love it! So many possibilities with VWs.
Managed to pick up some tin at Bugorama that has already been prepped for paint.
I've got a project slowly taking shape of getting a full set of tin, having it ready, and then when the engine comes out, I'll get all of that AND my new-to-me unblocked heat-riser installed. The swap meet is great for finding all kinds of bargains without shipping costs.
There are a TON more snapshots I took, and hopefully other folks are adding theirs too, I know Everett uploaded several.
Here's the link to any/all photos that folks have added.
Lots more split-buses to look at, and a huger vareity of everything else too.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_search.php?...ts=summary
Hope everyone had a great Three-Day Memorial Day weekend and had a chance to be out and about in their VWs. _________________ ----------------------------------------------------------

Nice and shiny but “perfectly restored” is definitely not the case. Wink, wink. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

Bryce, I see you snapped some pictures when I was still isolated from the rest of the swap meet hahaha...

Good point Crofty... I should have written; "fun to look at shiny SO-42 style camper interior."
I forgot too that it has grey vinyl instead of mustard yellow.
...and so that grey floor doesn't fool anyone; it's just a very flat grey carpet. _________________ ----------------------------------------------------------

I think Everett uploaded that; one of his.
Is it possible that you were the only split-window double cab at the entire meet this year?

Yes, that's me creeping on your Double Cab
There were at least 2 more DCs across the way from his Truck but maybe hidden a bit once the swap meet filled in _________________ How to Post Photos

Not to get too off topic: There were at least four in view from mine...spread out here and there. And I thought I saw EB floating around! Lots of familiar faces and VWs this weekend. Good times even with the hootin and hollarin past midnight haha. _________________ ,,Wenige Menschen denken, und doch wollen alle entscheiden.'' -der Alte Fritz

"Camp & Shine" Lakeport, CA Sat. June 16th, 2018
Another great meet/show with wonderful people.
This show is nicely small (compared to things like Bugorama) and that it has a great place to camp right next to the showplace is also fantastic.
It is the people, however, that always make this show one of our favorites; everyone is nice, great to talk with, and back at the campsite folks share meals, etc.
The Toaster at the campsite:
The club that puts this on, Norcal Aircooled Group (NAGVW), has members who embody the VW-spirit; friendliness, inclusiveness, plus they organize the event really well and it's always a lot of fun.
There's a great raffle too, that you can get tickets for, everything from VW-branded items and parts, to shirts, to tools, to fun kitsch & chotchkies. This year I won a 1/2" deep socket (metric) set along with a t-shirt.
Raffle:
But to the participating VWs of the show...
Worth particularly noting at this meet was this beautiful rare 1953 RHD bug that took home some well-deserved awards.
The judging is participant adjudicated, which I love since you can vote for the vehicles that appeal to YOU in each category.
We and The Toaster are therefore humbly appreciative to our VW peers for a 2nd place Stock Bus award...
...and also very humbled to be have been awarded the Club Choice award by Norcal Aircooled Group (NAGVW).
After the show, those who are camping make a point to share food and drink, and at The Toaster again this year we served up fondue to everyone who wanted to drop by for some...
There's a ton more snap-shot photos of almost every car that attended
(I know I missed a few, because I also went over to the Homemade Wine and Beer fundraiser right next to the VW show. That event supports the local symphony).
Here's the link to the rest of the photos... and a few split-buses to end this post.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_search.php?...ts=summary
If you haven't made it to this event, come on out next year!
Father's Day Weekend in 2019
Thank you again to NAGVW for the great weekend and all the VW folks at the meet.

The August 2018 Hot VWs Magazine has come out and I am proud as well as humbled to report that my article about our cross country trip (last July July, 2017) has been published.
Many thanks to Shin Watanabe of Hot VW Magazine for selecting it for publishing.
Also, I was very pleased to be able to mention BulliBill and his wife in the article, as well as nlorntson and Dick.
...but also, ostensibly to ALL of the wonderful Samba folks that we have met, talked to, exchanged PMs and forum messages with and even visited (looking at you; Abscate and your wonderful family).
Thanks everyone for the encouragement (and "Toaster Drinks") for our trip in July of last year.
As of very recently I haven't been posting on TheSamba much (just lurking), but have been driving The Toaster a lot (even for work), and saving our pennies to finally get the driver's side door painted!
Pick up a copy of August's Hot VWs if you aren't already a subscriber.
Thank you everyone!

Excellent news! It is great that Shin featured the story of your cross-country adventures. We were delighted to host you both in "the Toaster" as you passed westward through the St. Louis region, and we had a great time getting to know you during your visit! And of course, you guys are welcome here anytime!
I'll have to go and get a copy of the magazine right away!
