|
|
Ugh,
Seems the rebuild kits for the Girling calipers are NLA;
Both Bus Depot and aircooled.net are saying "backorder" a.k.a. "pound sand".
While it's not the end of the world to drop $300 for a pair of new Brazil calipers,
These here are really pretty good shape, high quality, and OG to the bus..
Sooo… Anybody have a set of Girling rebuild kits they can be persuaded to part with?
Maybe someone has an end-run to Girling themselves, or another car that uses these same calipers?
Any help is appreciated. _________________ Bus Motor Build

the fiche shows a part number that came up on one site to a TRW SP4017. Another site showed that number works on 76 bays- mid-80's Vanagons with Girling. I have never used one because ATE is what my buses had. That said your flaps might be able to verify the use and if is available. There were some on TRW on ebay but I've seen stuff advertised then money was refunded because the part was NLA.
this is from one of the ads. There is also one ad on ebay for a blue and yellow Lucas/Girling box with SP4017 on it, but only one set:
VAG : 211698471B, NISSAN : 41120Y4025, 41120U3425, 41120-U3425, 41120-Y4025, PEUGEOT : 444820, TOYOTA : 0447930021, 04479-30021 _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

The Centrix kit....part # 143.33013....Rockauto is out of stock on. Summit lists it and if they are out of stock but still list it...they can usually get it.
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/ceb-143-33013
Ths ship date of 6-21 says it's technically out of stock.
The Centfic kits are usually OEM Girling or FAG. Ray |

The quest continues...
Stopped by my local Napa, and they didn't have any luck.
This can be a good alternative source, especially with a ninja at the counter.
Pelican didn't have the TRW kit,
but they had a "genuine VW/Audi" kit for part# 211 698 471 B.
Says it was special order...
So I gambled $40 on it to see what it is..
After this,
if still no luck,
Maybe just have to measure and gamble on something.
Perhaps with some digging, a site like this will have our goodies:
https://www.onlinecarparts.co.uk/oenumber/211698471b.html
I have an Ate kit here, and will have to look at it more closely.
Perhaps some parts, like the caliper half O-rings,
the things they call 'bridge seals' might be the same.
The pads from Ate and Girling seem the same, as well..
Another question is if the spindles are the same??
Will report back this info here later just for documentation..
So,
maybe there is a way - we're already past it being worth it to make this quest.
I coulda had a set of used Ates bought and rebuilt by now.
Or definitely a set of new Brazil calipers already on!
At this point, though, we've come too far to quit!! _________________ Bus Motor Build

Pelican just got back to me saying the special order caliper rebuild kit was NLA..
Looking like Girling calipers have gone the way of the Passenger Pigeon. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Cip lists a girling rebuild kit for vanagon 80-85. Maybe the same as for a late bus seeing as the other listings are for 76-85? They're in stock anyway...

Try searching for Autofren Seinsa D4020 for Lucas if you can't get some. I THINK that might work based on the B number being listed and couple sites showing it for Luca/Girling brakes. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Thanks for all of the help, guys.
The quest continues...
After the ebay seller came back NLA,
I ordered this CIP kit here-->
http://www.cip1.ca/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC-251-698-471-A
Notice it says "single piston".
Ordered a couple sets in the off chance that the one piston it does have,
Matches one side of the two pistons in the bus caliper..
Worth a try, right?
Will report back.
Onward and upward! _________________ Bus Motor Build

Did you compare the ATE seals to the Girling seals? The dust boots may be different, because the Girling uses a retaining wire.
Note there is only one listing for the pistons, #5. But the seals might be the same.
Thx jersey

Good idea, Tim.
I looked at the boots, and they were different than the ATE boots.
Will look more closely at the seals.. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Look at that two seals for the price of one and they come with assembly lube.

They might not ship to the U.S. Which if that is the case, maybe a friendly aussie can buy it and ship it. Of course who knows what customs will think. |
