Having trouble re-inserting a spark plug that blew out of the #4 cylinder head (rear, driver's side) on my 1968 Ghia. Threads on the plug appear intact. What is the correct mm-size of the spark plug socket I should use? AND...besides removing the battery to facilitate access, is there any else I can easily remove/move out of the way to get this job done? Thanks |

I believe it is a 13/16" spark plug socket. Yes, everything else is metric, but spark plug sockets stayed SAE until recently. _________________ 1966 Karmann-Ghia convertible |

13/16 is the socket size for plugs. Hopefully the head threads didn't get mangled as the plug worked its self out. If the plug is not easily wanting to start, try putting it freezer over night . Sometimes shrinking .0001 is enough. . Lube the threads with anti seize. Here is a trick i learned for hard to start plugs and for weird angles like on the type lV motor . Cut a length of fuel line and stick the plug on one end. Then place in the head and twirl the plug around with your fingers , till you feel the threads catch . This gives you more sensitive control and Keeps you from jamming the threads .If that doesn't do it , put plug back in freezer for a while, Then take off the intake manifold and heat the spark plug hole with a propane torch . Try again.
If successful, yet the plug spits out again ,You will have to get a hell-coil or better, A time-cert installed. |

Not all, some are 5/8" (left).
