The four small holes in the rain gutters?

What is the reason that each rain gutter has two small holes drilled in them? They look factory, but I don't recall seeing them on any other bug I've ever owned?

This is a 1955 sedan.

Any ideas?

They look to be factory to me, but they are located about where a roof rack would hit the rain gutters.

My chassis & body numbers are: 1-888630

When was this car built? Is there a way to tell what day?

I think it is a May 1955 build, but I'm not sure.

Are you sure there is not a “0” in front of that first 8? If not your pan/VIN tag are incorrect

Are the doors ribbed? My buddy had a ribbed door 55 with bullets, thought it was cool.

I have holes drilled into the gutters of my Nov '54. It had a zinc-plated steel roof rack when I bought it, but the holes had nothing to do with holding the rack in place.

Was stainless steel gutter trim ever offered as an accessory? Perhaps this trim was held in place with rivets, much like early Mini Coopers.

A friend of mine has a '59 that has small holes drilled on the drip rail, two on each side of the car.

Depends on where the holes are...could be a front visor, side mirror, roof rack, etc

It could be for a dealer installed accessory, but the factory didn't put them there

Glad you had the other "0", it is an awesome car, 55 is just a cool year due to all the little changes and short time period

End of May is 892300. So your car last few days of May. Maybe 4 days before the end of the month. You'd have to get a birth certificate to know for sure.
