Hey everyone I have a 1979 VW westy FI engine. Some days I'll start the bus, let it run and no problem (not touching the accelerator). Other days I start it up, it idles for a couple seconds and the battery light comes on, I add some accelerator the light goes off, sometimes if I don't add accelerator it will bring itself back to idle or die. There was a short time before the above where it would start run fine but the battery light would stay on as long as I let it idle (1-2 minutes), until I revved the engine and the light would go off. It appears once I allow it to run for a few minutes, while adding slight accelerator it eventually catches itself and is fine.

Any Ideas? I thought maybe the alternator was going bad but I'm far from mechanic.

Thanks in advance!

Have you tested your aux air regulator AAR? You could also have a something like a cracked S boot where the crack opens up more when cold.

the alternator light being on could be a bad connection, bad voltage regulator or even worn brushes in the alternator. Belts can get loose and slip too. You'll probably need to find someone honest and proficient in VW buses if you are not mechanically inclined.

Sorry for the delayed response but things have been hectic. Thanks for the the replies and I did manage to have local vw mechanic to take a look...

1. Checked timing, good.
2. Checked valves, good.
3. Checked for vacuum leaks and cracks, none found.
4. Checked belt = good.
5. reviewed wiring = good.
6. AFM = The P.O. rebuilt the engine and used a AFM (air flow meter) from a vanagon, we swapped it out for the correct one and it ran better. I still have the wrong air box on it but that doesn't seem to be a issue.
7. Fuel Pump = was making a loud noise and told it was going out. Replaced fuel pump, pressure regulator and fuel filter.

Everything is running smooth now and the only issue is on start I have to give a little gas (a nice rev or 2) but after that it ideals steady.
