| I purchased some original style seamless axle boot clamps to secure the axle boots on my splitcase trans. The clamp kits consist of metal stips 9mm wide and about 10" long and these little keys that have what looks like a cut off cotter pin that you must thread the band through and then rotate to tighten around the boot. Any one ever install these before? Perhaps an instruction diagram? Clamps were purchased from Stoddard Porsche and no instructions were included. Thanks. |

Can you post a picture of your clamps?
Little of topic- Did you press apart your axle tubes from the end piece? I want to order seamless boots, but don't if they can be stretched over the shock mount?

you work the non-split boots over the flange at the transmission end (which means removing the axle tube). i've never tried going over the cast shock mount end, seems a little risky.

You can install seamless boots w/o pressing off the end casting on the axle tube. You have to turn the boot inside out and start the big end of the boot over the domed end of the axle tube the hard part is getting the little end of the boot over the end of the axle tube. Its like a skinny girl giving birth to a fat baby.
I ran mine under some hot water and used a little bit of liquid soap to make it easier. Holding the axle tube in a vice is a good idea as well but not absolutely necessary. I had a friend help hold the tube as I put the boot on.

| Thanks for the replies. The boots are on the axles. What I need to find out is how to install the above pictured band clamps. How the bands route through the tightening key and how it's secured against slippage once tight. Any ideas? |

Great detail photos. Please excuse my stupidity but after the band is routed as pictured it looks like the band is then passed through the cotter key looking thing. How do you tension the band? Should I pull on the band with a vise grip and then rotate the key to lock in place, or do you stick a screw driver tip into the eye of the key and sort of wrap the band around the axle so to speak? Clockwise or counter-clockwise? Sorry for all the questions but I bought only 5 clamps so I can't afford to screw up the installation more than once. |

Yep, twisting the cotter is what tightens the band. It's sort of like the old twist key tuna or spam cans. Twist so the band feeds between the boot and the cotter on the bottom, rather than over the top.
I recall getting most of the slop out of the band prior to beginning to twist. I think at least two wraps on the cotter should do it.
I recall the band circles the boot twice, first time under the cotter and the second time through the cotter slit. The last picture from BBT seems to appear as though it goes around once and is then tightened I found that the first layer of band kept the cotter, etc. from digging into the boot and allowed it to slip and tighten.
