I decided to reindex my torsions for a little hight on the rear of my 65' Baja tonight, so i put it on the lift and as im lifting it off the ground i notice the rear wheel "Drop" as it comes of the ground,,, Confused strange, so i grab the wheel and its got some play in it, check other side, same thing?
Pop wheels off figuring axle nut was loose, but i didn't think so in the back of my head that they both were loose and i remember replacing the drums and
TorQ'ed the nuts when i reassembled before Christmas when i replaced the axles , so both nuts are tight, i take them off and the drums are loose, axle nuts has eaten up front of drums and half of the splines are shot on the drums, more so on drivers side but both sides are junk, amazing with less than 40 miles of driving, which was only one weekend at Glamis, and i didn't even hammer the thing!! I took it easy because i just replaced both axles after a break weekend before Xmas never again will i use BDC drums, i called Napa where i have an account and ordered a new set and there from Brembo so we will see if there better, i may have a set of OG german ones but if not i have to have a set on hand, anyone else have this happen with BDC drums??,,,oh yeah and my napa guy is taking the drums back and giving me a credit, see the pics below

That is crazy! Shocked Goes to show you have to be careful on what type of aftermarket parts you get. At least you caught it before it left ya stranded somewhere.

I had the same thing happen years ago but it was caused by the spacers crushing slightly, loosening the drum and messing up the splines like yours. Damn cheap spacers!

This is why you will often hear to only run OG drums if your doing any off roading. Get a set of those and be glad you caught the problem before you were out on the road.

Check your spacer the drum rides against.
It may be worn from drum being loose.

kinda leaning this way myself... I learned this one the hard way, destroying 3 drums in a month...2 brazilian, and a german. Came to find my spacer had crushed just enough to allow 300 ft lbs of torque, but I was torquing nut against axle splines, not against the drum itself.... good luck on your quest.

I will admit, however, I did roll that car because I broke the entire center out of the brazilian drum, and do highly recommend german OE drums over anything else...

Well after a few things i looked at i found the cause, see pics below.
The orig spacer did crush beyod spec and the back side od the axel nut was beat up prior to me swapping out the last set of drums, so when it was TQ'd it really wasn't and it just beat its self up because nut was beat, spacer crushed.
So now theres a new spacer, nut with larger surface area and drum installed and tightened to spec so were good to go.

note the beat up drum from the nut Crying or Very sad

note the nut beat up and rounded over hence the nut is technically not as tall as it should be

I have always needed a spacer between the drum and bearing, and a space between drum and nut... (on IRS conversions) when I bought the disc brakes, it came with a thicker spacer to replace the thinner exterior spacer... hope that helps

(post resurrection)

So now that we know the crushed spacer was in one the action, what is the verdict on the drum? Still a crappy drum, or are they a viable replacement?

Had this happen while autocrossing. Inside the drum is cast the letters BDC, 2, diameter tolerance.
