This doesn't look like what I've got.

Here is a drawing.

Quick question [i anyone is still reading this thread.]

According to this pic, two wires are coming off the aux battery's neg post and heading towards the aux accessories.

I have an aux battery. It's hooked up exactly like i see above. But i only have a neg going to the chassis.

I run a fuse box off the positive post that powers my fog lights, cig lighter outlet and radio. Where exactly would I run a neg line to on that setup?

Does that make sense?

his battery was connected wrong. that is why he drew the picture that way, and he rewired it properly so now it works.

in your scenario negative can be anywhere on the chassis that is metal. if you think of it, none of the grounded wires in your main wiring harness are connected to the battery post, they all go to the chassis. usually the only wire that goes to the negative post is ground strap.

Cool, thanks.

I did the wiring the other day and I kept having problems.

I have a voltage meter in the cig lighter so i can keep an eye on my amps of the aux.

I start the bus and i can run my radio and fog lights, but when I turn off the engine, i lose the amps coming from my aux. I think I've figured out that my aux battery isn't holding a charge. It reads 14.2 or so while driving... but 7.2 when its turned off... and the radio goes dead.

Time to exchange that battery.

The schematic is correct.

To be clear:
(1) The really big red alternator wire should be going to either the main battery positive terminal or to the big lug on the starter. The main battery, therefore, is charged directly by the alternator. The aux battery is charged via the relay from the main battery.

(2) The alternator actually has two outputs: the big red wire (B+) and the small red wire (D+). The output voltage at these two terminals is roughly the same when the alternator is operating. The big difference is the D+ terminal is good for only around 5 amps while the B+ terminal is good for 55 amps. The regulator is connected to D+ because connecting it to B+ would slowly run the battery down when the engine wasn't running.

Test:
(a) disconnect both the 87 and 86 wires from the relay. You should be able to measure 12 volts on the relay terminal 30 from the main battery and 12 volts on the disconnected 87 wire from the aux battery.

(b) connect relay terminal 86 to 12 volts. The relay should click in, and you should be able to measure 12 volts on the 87 terminal.

(c) if both of these connections are true, reconnect the original wires to the relay, and all should be well. The aux battery should charge.
