I own a 78 Beetle that I’ve done a decent about of work to over the last couple of years. A buddy of mine just bought a 73 Thing from Bring a Trailer. I took it for a drive last night and it lacks power under load until it hits a certain RPM. My guess is that it’s running too rich.
Here is a description of his motor:
The stock Type K air-cooled 1,600cc dual port engine was stroked to 1,956cc by Morris Race Engines. The following modifications and upgrades were completed prior to 2015:
Forged 76 crank and 90.5 pistons
Flycut CB 4140 racing heads for 9.5:1 compression ratio
Dual HD 650 high-rev springs
CB 2213 camshaft
12.5-pound flywheel
Rebuilt/re-jetted double-barrel Dellorto 40 DLRA carburetors
Full-flow oil sytem with remote filter and deep-sump pan
What/where is the best resource for learning how to tune the carbs so it’s not running rich, and what else could be causing this?
Here’s a link to the auction with photos and more description of the car.
