I received an email from Terry, Tom’s daughter. She and her brother have plans to return to LA in June. The plan is to complete the brake job on his bus and she’s invited me to help. Hopefully the timing will be good and we can get this done.

Please give my best to the family, I lost my Dad on Good Friday, but at 93 I could only be thankful for all the time I got with him.

I did not know Tom. I had no one on one interaction with Tom. I, of course, came across Tom's posts over the years and they seemed to often stand out. I do feel the pain of losing someone close and of losing someone who made a difference in your life as a mentor, confidant, mediator, and friend.
Love and good roads.

Update: Yesterday Telford Dorr and I drove 130 miles into Los Angeles and met with Toms kids, Terry and Jeff. We brought lots of tools and together with what Tom had we were able to fabricate some hard brake lines for his front disc brake conversion that he never finished.

Terry and Jeff were great. Tom raised them right. Once the brakes were bled we did his Vanagon too. I guess it was real close to complete brake failure due to lack of fluid. Got that straightened out.

Here's a pic of Telford with the kids in front of their house. Jeff looks, acts, and sounds exactly like his Dad.

So I'm the new owner of Toms bus. Here it is in front of my house in San Diego.

Thanks Tom for the bus and thanks for being a great father and friend

Update: Monday July 30, 2018

Tom's bus just got a new life this past weekend. I couldn't give it the attention it deserves and I found a very nice, long married, couple from Yuma to take it over. Dwayne and Kathy Alford are the new owners.

They went to a lot of trouble and made a few trips back and forth between AZ and San Diego in order to see it and then get it home. These people are super excited to be in the bay window community and I'm sure will take great care of it.

My hope was to be able to find someone who would drive it and enjoy it. I wasn't looking for a flipper. I had many contact me. Hell, if anyone was gunna flip it, it would have been me. No, i kept it just as Tom had. Well, short the disco ball and a few other things like the styrofoam head on the dash board.

The new owners are perfect and I'm sure Tom would approve. They plan to document their efforts and travels so as soon as they share that with me I'll post up here for you guys to see.

Wow, I've been away from the forums for a few weeks while I settle into a new job and was both saddened and uplifted by this thread. It's really heartwarming to see how folks from all over can come together to celebrate the life of someone like this. I can only hope when I'm gone that enough people are able to wish me well on the eternal journey the way Tom has seen in this thread. It's clear that Tom made a positive impact and impression on the people he met. When asked by my daughters why some people seem to go before their time, my only response has ever been: the test is over for them and they passed. They're ready for the reward now.

RIP, Tom. Enjoy the reward!

- Doug
