I think a lot of people think IDF’s or DRLA’s are too big, but they work great on these engines...especially this one with the longer stroke.
They breathe better and can be tuned more precise, one barrel per cylinder, tuned exactly as needed for each cylinder.
How much hp? No idea, but there’s no comparison in throttle response and quality of carb.
It’s not a cheap swap for sure...$300 for manifolds and $600-$800 for carbs, not to mention a good linkage |

Great looking car and motor.
If you ever get the urge for a little more power, I highly recommend going to a set of dual 36DRLAs with Ray's manifolds.
When I switched to 36IDF's it made a huge difference...if I do it again, I'll go DRLA's over IDFs...more progression holes for smoother throttle

I plan to do a carb upgrade after a few more miles. I have the Speedwell manifolds, but will be using Solex 40 P-II’s. They are completely rebuilt with smaller venturi’s, ready to go. Linkage will be modified Porsche 356 setup. That’s the goal. Would like to run the Knecht filters I have, but don’t think they will fit. I have a couple sets of velocity stacks to play with.

Solex P40-II’s
I looked at installing P-40's, but ended up with Zenith 32 NDIX's. They're supposed to be better suited for a 1600cc engine that doesn't go above 5K.
Cheers,

Can’t argue with P40’s, vintage correct
It will run awesome
I had custom 24 vents made for my 36IDFs, but I also had stock stroke and bore |

Short drive-by video:
Link
Still tuning suspension. Pirelli CN36 185's up front now, matching the rear. Handling feels very neutral, lot's of grip. Still learning it's capabilities. Braking is excellent with 356B drums. As mentioned before, I'm running a larger 3/4" sway bar up front on 2" narrowed beam + restored Empi split-case camber compensator in the rear. All new stock bushings front & rear, no red urethane. Koni Classic shocks front & rear, I still need to adjust them, currently set at softest setting. I've read that approximately 1 1/2 turns each might be a good start. Ride quality is not harsh in anyway, soft with plenty of travel, but with reduced body roll. Feels like it could be a little stiffer, but not much. Still very fun to drive. Engine continues to perform well. Not pushing it, staying around 3k - 3.5k rpm max right now.
More updates to come....

the stock engine was designed to run at 3400rpms all day long. With your build, some blasts to 4500-5000 are not going to hurt it.
Glad it is running well, making me miss my 54 |

After the first time I saw a Porsche Abarth with a Sebring exhaust, I thought, 'I've gotta get one of those for my 52'. I know if you have to ask you can't afford it, but,how much was that thing? I've been running one of Joe's abarth repros for over 20,000 miles and like it, but I just love that single center pipe. |

I had a couple questions regarding the dash layout & mods...here's a legend. "Map Lamp" is a license plate light, not sure what car it's off, might be universal. On/Off switch for map light is located under dash. It works really well, lots of light without distracting driver. Dash gauge grills are from Grumpy's Metal in Huntington Beach. Missing from shot on far right is vintage rally badge mounted to glove box and NOS Bosch accessory power plug mounted under dash for Helphos spot light, etc. Shift knob is Porsche 917 style which matched the steering wheel perfectly. Rest of interior is stock red brown/grey with vintage race style seat belts. Functional, purpose built design based on stuff you might be able to get at this time period. Everything works as it should.

Update.....
Engine: Continues to run great. Slowly starting to push the rpm's higher. Drove a few sustained miles over the weekend at 75 mph with engine rpm at 3000k to 3200k. Smooth all the way. I have a few bolt-on mods coming to add performance, will update when they arrive from California. Really want to do the Solex carb upgrade, but that will need to wait a little bit longer. Short video of engine idling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMZ6RaSHPk4
Suspension: I tried adjusting the Koni Classic shocks, but ended up going back to the softest setting. I tried many different rebound combinations front and rear, but it never felt better, just became a little sketchy to be honest. Feels fine just the way it is.
I also mounted up CSP's Front Suspension Stiffener: https://www.csp-shop.com/en/front-axle/csp-front-suspension-stiffener-498-001-111a-12657a.html. I noticed an improvement to cornering, more predictable, but nothing dramatic. Install was easy, bolt-on. I have some more suspension mods coming as well and will update when they are finished. Mods are intended to fix ride height up front to reduce tire rub and improve handling.
Body: Haven't changed or added anything, but I do have a couple subtle changes in the works. Just received some parts from France that need to be painted. Will update when mounted.

Hi Erik!
Glad to "hear" your engine is running strong/smooth. I'm running OG SANDCAST Solex 40 P-11's with 28mm venturi's.
A little sluggish at low RPM's but when you get above 1200 RPM's, hold on to your seat. At freeway speeds,....i'm doing 70mph
and when nail the throttle, you can feel yourself being pushed back in your seat! I love it! I've had it over 100mph
and still picking up speed but had to back off since i'm running bias/radial tires and was afraid I might blow the tires off the rims .
Not sure if they were designed for that speed.... The engine temp. never went over 200* with that AIRFLOW SYSTEMS 36hp
aluminum oil cooler. I highly recommend it!
BTW: Whats "different" about these Solex 40 P-11's and air filters?

Thanks Joe! Yes, it's running great! I do have an Airflow Systems oil cooler ready for install once Solex carbs are mounted. I'm going to try my 40 P-II's with 26mm venturi's first to see if it helps the low end, we will see. Your filters look like Kinecht, but there is no breather hole or stamped product info on top. What's the story on these? The carb bodies are missing some of the details I have on mine...are they early sandcast? _________________ Erik

Ah....You noticed that the Knecht logo nor the breather hole isn't there. These carburetors and air cleaners came off a 1950's Porsche Carrera 4 cam engine.
They are not zinc die cast metal but rather sand cast aluminum which gives 'em their silver finish. The air cleaners are in fact Knecht but real early without
their logo's nor breather hole. They came on my Denzel engine in my patina lowlight Ghia. BTW, I love that video of your beetle making a pass. Sounds good!
