Hello all, first time ACVW owner here! Just picked up a pretty rough 74 VW Thing with many indications that it is an original Acapulco. Correct range VIN, running boards, proper blue paint hiding under a horrible all white respray. The top is missing although the surrey top posts by the mirrors remain. Seats have been recovered with a different scheme although trashed anyway.

This will be my biggest mechanical undertaking to date although I'm no stranger to restoring old stuff. I see there are lots of manuals for the 1600 motor so I'm not too worried about that but is there anything available that is Thing specific? I see there are some "all models" books but I had a Chilton's "mustang, capri, merkur" repair manual that I would have never used for my Merkur XR4Ti. It was just too generic.

Floorpans are shot, motor has had a missing intake boot and missing fan hoses for a questionable amount of time and there's plenty of acorns/debris in the engine bay so I wouldn't mind dropping the motor for a proper inspection but I probably should just remove the body completely off the chassis for the new floors anyway. Are there any manuals out there that document these procedures? I've read/bookmarked a few posts on the matter but nothing beats a step by step guide with photos if available.

Thanks!

There used to be a link to "Stellar Autoplex" that had a near perfect Acapulco to look at with close to 500 pictures of every detail. The site is down, but you can find good images on the Domeck bothers' site, Kubeltreffen181.com that might help you:
