Bare with me. I was very young at my first SOTO meet. Maybe 12. Dad took me along. Garden Grove. 1980-something.

I remember Garden Grove, Dear Park and many other places as i grew up learning how to drive, work on and restore buses. (OK, a bug too) Somewhere we have all of our old new letters still. Fun to read the ads.

Flash forward 10 years or so. I was at a local book store and found the book "Classic Volkswagens" by Colin Burnham. Read the bus section of the book in the store since Charlie and his commercial buses were featured. That was unusual back then and Charlie always had time for my stupid questions. A great read. What does this have to do with SOTO you ask?

I got to the back cover.

Does anyone have photos from a couple SOTO meets in the OC back in say 1986-1988? Not quite sure the years.

I was in high school and brought my green and white 67 13 window, almost the same as that 23 window posted above in the magazine.

I sadly don't have any pictures.

I also did a HOT VW's caravan to a Vegas show in 1987 I think, unfortunately those pictures got lost as well.

Sadly, there were none in there. I did find a picture of a friends bus, PP Stain, I would almost guess that I would have been parked next to him.

Hey dirtslinger. Your query got me curious so I busted out my stack of old photos from the 80s and went through them one by one. Southern Cal, Pleasanton Bug Bash, Kelly Park, Baylands Raceway. So much fun spending time on memory lane. Anyway, is there any chance this is your bus? This pic was taken at the SOTO So Cal show in Spring of 1988. Fingers crossed.

If it's yours, send me your address and I'll drop the photos in the mail on Monday.

I have the plate hanging in my garage, I got a ticket for no front plate and had to put white ones on it.

It was in Babes and bugs calendar the same year, then it supposedly went to Japan.

Dirtslinger.

Score!!!. I can't believe we found it. And now I see PP Stain parked in front. Nice.

Happy to help. Again, if you'd like the actual photos, shoot me your address and I'll drop them in the mail.

Cheers,

Ok... this thread made me dig up some memories. I`ll post my newsletters later. I was the SOTO Fresno chapter rep back then. And we used to drive down to Deer Park for the meets all the time. I used to have meets here in Fresno at Woodward park. And these eventually morphed the Madera Spring Fling.... The good old days.
Sorry about the sketchy pictures but they are in a photo album.

So funny, I’ve owned this book for years. We had a discussion in here years ago regarding that Barndoor 23 that was for sale in that pic.

Thats cool.
"Classic Volkswagens" was my first VW book in the late 80s, and still is one of my favourite VW books. I always liked that picture of the SOTO meet.
But my absolute favourite was the dove blue DD panel.
What has this to do with SOTO? The guy fueling up the panel is wearing a SOTO T-Shirt. Very Happy

In a box in the garage or a box tucked away in the closet I've got a video of the caravan to Famosa Raceway in Bakersfields from the early 80's. I'll look for it.

Hey there
I was in the Australian leg of the S.O.T.O in the early nineties which led to the A.S.K.K Australian Split Window Kombi Klub lots of great memories and crazy cheap prices! Unfortunately both my first splits a 64 single sold for $350and a 62 panel sold for $280 with the SOTO stickers ended in the tip not by me! I still have all the literature if anyone is interested in viewing just have to shuffle kombis to get to it!
Cheers!

Please would someone be so kind to find the old SOTO Newsletter advert for my Barndoor Deluxe?
Probably sold out of Oregon. I was told it was in an early 1994 newsletter. Guess it could be a 93 or 94 edition.
