Very nice of you to jump in and help them out! Post some pictures of the autopsy of the engine. I think we're all curious.

Stu says he thinks they can do a complete engine rebuild in a week or two. Depending on machine shop.

My customer talked to Brothers Machine. They told him two weeks. Well, it’s been close to that and they are still tearing it down. Now the owner is hoping it only take another month.

My point is that these kids are traveling and have a schedule to keep. Their entire trip is going to be ruined because of setbacks that aren’t known right now. That’s why I suggested buying a complete, rebuilt long block.

The problem is finding one ready to go off the shelf. I saw many offers for rebuilt long blocks but I doubt they are built by reputable shops and fully ready to ship.

Got it back to the farm...Looking like we are going to power wash the engine and trans, remove and tear down to the short block and inspect for a proper diagnosis. This guy also happens to be a 11 year master boat mechanic, so between my limited expertise with VWS and where to get parts, and his tools and ability to turn a wrench, I’m guessing we can do a full rebuild in a week or two depending on machine shop turn around time. You guys are treating this like a couple high school girls just blew their engine on their 25k bus...chillax for a bit and let me get some accurate diagnostics done so we can fill you in on the proper details.

Getting the right information can really help to point the finger in the right direction... or in this case, what the next step is.

It’s not like I’m going to use Ketchup And JB WELD to do a quick partial rebuild fix...we will fix it right. Wink

Stu,

I have a long Seattle overnight next Wednesday. I'd love to come out and help if I can, or at least come visit and catch up. Lemme know, I'll pack a set of shop clothes. Same if I'll need a rental car or you can grab me.

You know what an Optimist I am, Stu, but a week turnaround in a shop will require some astrophysics alignment, or a lot of astroglide.

Dropping everything I have off at NW connecting rod, he said he should have it balanced and returned ready for reassembly by Friday of this next week.

Diagnosis:
Cylinder 1 hole was a little unhappy...

Holy smokes! Shocked Does the owner have any idea how many miles were on that engine?

What's the deal with the broken case? Do you or the machine shop have another one?

That’s really unfortunate, yet in a somewhat perverted way sort of good. Why? Now there won’t be any ‘crossed fingers and a Hail Mary’ type of enroute repair jobs. You won’t waste a bunch of time trying to scrounge good bearing parts and seals and worrying about setting deck height between two different heads, and ‘maybe’ rebuilt connecting rods.

You get to start with a fresh long block and swap engine management parts and reinstall. Nice!

Pretty cool they still have the thermostat and EGR valve.

Roadside is easy. Keeping a constant speed while staying between the lines is much tougher. At least that’s the way it was 40 years ago

Soo... looking at the dead body on the autopsy table, what's the experts opinions on the mileage that engine had on it?

I'm thinking well over 100k.
