About the only way to judge the mileage on a Type 4 engine is to look at the cam and lifters.

Not much other wear on the engine corresponds to mileage.

This engine may have been run low on oil or over revved 20k miles ago and only now decided to die.

Hello,
If it is of any help...
I have a complete 2.0L cv engine(1980 vanagon) that seems to be a recent rebuilt. It has good results from the leak down test, plugs seem fine(1-4 L-R), oil doesn't smell burnt and it was really clean underneath. Most of the oil seemed to be coming from in front of the engine tin, tranny? Oh, well... take a look at the pictures, the last pic is after the steam clean. there are more in the gallery.
So, if you need it. For the case, crank, rods or what ever; if it will work, being a vanagon engine, let me know. I can ship it on a pallet Fedex.

I have a 71 bus so this engine isn't doing me any good and I'm not into it for that much. So, let me know if it can be of any help.

That's the ticket right there. A 2.0 is a 2.0. Yank that puppy down to the long block and have it shipped, Stu. Put the Bus fuel exhaust and tin on it- clutch and flywheel too to save on shipping weight- and away she goes.

Wonder if and Samba folks are heading north from California. Maybe it could be gotten to me in Springfield Or. and Stu or the owners could bomb down and get it.

Just a thought... I don't mind providing the meetup spot. Maybe it CAN get on the road in a week! Laughing Hell, I'll even throw burgers and beer in the mix.

Great offer, and I’ll save it as a backup and I can pick it up personally with my TDI if the parts aren’t back by Friday. However, NW connecting rod is saying he can get me everything to build a long lock ourselves by the end of next week. So we are gonna have a full new engine built by us. Keep ya posted all!

You should pick it up anyways as a backup for Corky. Wink Vanagon Westys were fresh hell on 2.0 aircooleds.

You can't bolt a 1978 and earlier exhaust to a Vanagon long block due to the change in exhaust port design. You would also have to deal with a few other differences in the design that might be fine for the DIY, but one probably wouldn't want to be paying someone else to do the work.

Hello, ^^^^ You are correct. For some reason I thought it was a 79 that was broken, with the square exhaust ports.
Oh well, It was just a thought....
Well, if anyone gernades their engine coming though the area, I've got one, along with a BA6 heater system..

Pretty cool they still have the thermostat and EGR valve.

Um, no.. that thermostat is expanded and shot;
(Same with the one on the Vanagon donor offer),
And,
I’ll bet you that EGR is plugged solid.

So,
Looking at the amount of sludge piled onto the top of that dead motor,
It looks to me that this thing was a giant pile all along.

Bet you the harness is wonky,
the injectors half-plugged,
And the temp sensors long ago gone wrong.

So it will be looking blow up again real soon..

Gotta pay your dues, boys.

Looks to me like our OP pretty much got what he ordered.

Sure,
There’s bad luck for people out there,
But just one look at this thing shows that things are exactly as they are supposed to be in the universe.

Good on the community for bailing him out anyways..!

Good to hear Jerry at NWCR is going to be part of the solution Stuart. I have nothing but praise for him as he has helped me out with both my Type 1 and Type 4 woes. Very Happy

Any updates?

If NWCR is machining/inspecting, it'll be all good.
Actually best spot in the tri-state area for this work.

Come on now. It’s only been a week since the engine diagnosis/autopsy. NWCR said it wouldn’t be until this Friday to have the work done with everything he dropped off. But I am curious about the details of this build and what the lovely couple has been doing all week. I’ve seen Stu do magical mechanics. So give him a chance.

I was talking about the donor engine...

EGR filter and valve can be serviced. At least the parts are there... and not sure how you can ascertain that the donor thermostat is bad. Of the coffee can full of the ones I have saved, I find the only true test is with a a dunk test and thermometer, but no matter. It’s all old and worn. It would be hard to justify putting that high mileage engine in and expecting good things. Besides, the vanagon exhaust is different.

Northwest Connecting Rod is not the same as it once was. I drank their Koolaid for the last decade. Jerry has become less hands on with the builds and the quality has really suffered. And if you need a quick engine it’s definitely not the place to go.

And that’s not like, “oh man he does such a good job it takes a while” either. You’re going to get excuse after excuse and in the end (weeks/months from now), you’ll get the same cobbled together weekend motor build.

Don’t get me wrong, Jerry is a cool dude. The people he has putting stuff together just don’t give a shit.

Which makes me wonder what’s going on with these travelers. First promise was a week or two. I said go rent something and continue the trip but sitting around waiting on a rebuilt long block is just no going to turn out well
