16 yrs into my restoration and I finally got time to finish the motor and install it.. Wouldn't you know it, everything went smooth until I cranked it over.. "No Spark" Everything is new (pics attached) I've ran all the normal tests (Ohm readings, test lamps on the coil, both pos. to neg, pos to ground)
All I can think of is that the ignition module is no good. This is my first time using an electronic ignition so excuse my lack of knowledge..
Is there another way to test the module?

Make sure that's a 3-ohm coil. There should be a .010" gap at the rotor pickup. I assume that red wire goes to the coil.
An overall pic might be helpful. _________________ I know the pieces fit, cos I watched them fall away.

Spin the distributor, should make sparks if coil is hooked up. If you hook up a test light in place of coil, it should go on and off. it's just like a switch, or relay. Connects and disconnects the black wire from ground.
just testing the coil I don't like to crank the engine.
Just unbolt the distributor clamp and pull it up a little and spin it. Leave it IN the hole tho, so it's grounded. |

You should be able to put test lamp on negative terminal of coil, have someone spin the motor over and you watch test lamp, test lamp should flash on-off-on-off-on-off.... If coil has power and is good and module is good... IF you have power to coil and lamp does not flash (stays dark) you may have open coil or module bad... If lamp stay on (all the time) you have good coil and "open" in wiring or module (bad module) ...

How's your ground strap?
My friend had one and it wouldn't start. Pulled my 009 out of my DC and installed it in his bug, started right up. His distributor worked in mine... I could only guess that he had some kind of electrical issue and his motor wasn't grounding or something. He previously had someone else just help him with a starter, and I was in nice clothes not about to crawl under it
The quality isn't there, make sure yours advances all the way (his didn't. that rubber grommet had to be trimmed) they really shouldnt be sold... _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

I also second(third/fourth/fifth/?) the idea of giving everything a quick look over and then trying points. Ground, power to coil, gap, etc. If that does not work, you are basically down to the module. I have not used a Pertronix myself but I have certainly heard enough stories to know that they do occasionally crap out. That and the new distributors have a bad reputation and worth going through to make sure it is all ok inside.

Well I ended up replacing the module but that still didn't fix it.. rechecked all my grounds and that as well as my fuel rail wasn't getting enough fuel to fire the engine.. So might have been a combination of a few things.. |
