Yes we have fixed the bended horn...
Unfortunately I have no pictures but basically we have fixed the pan against the floor and rebended the horn with a hydraulic jack.
It was quite easy and we have pushed a bit more than necessary so we now have a difference of 0,2 degree to the opposite direction because the torque of the engine works against. I think it should be fine by using an additional support bracket. |

obieoberstar...yesterday we have checked the final fitment of the engine and the pan after straighening the bended horns..... here is the result:
... I am totally satisfied so the pan has been ready for paint...
Now its time to take care for all the stuff that has been appeared during the blasting....but I think its time to imagine how it could look like...

About 6 month since my last post... 
Its time for a short update:
We have finished the final preparations for the paint. Means we have checked the fitment of the PTT bumpers and the window trim.
There have been no bigger issues so far and even the front bumper fits quite well except of the alignment of the bumper guards...
...the rear bumper fits really good...
Trying the driver side window trim was quite exciting because of the "new" fender but I think the result is good and the Ghia is ready for the paint right now...
.....on monday the Ghia will be on the way to the paint shop!! And even if its a 62 i guess its going to be really sweet in L337 Dolphin Blue

Rome next week would be great but it takes about 8 weeks

Thanks Inchpincher61... I'm finishing up my interior... Not sure what to do when it's done... I guess going back and doing what I really wanted to do but couldn't afford. Are these cars ever finished?

X2! - Dolphin Blue is a very sumptuous shade of blue and looks terrific on a Karmann Ghia.
So am I to understand that your PTT front bumper fit properly without any need to correct the angle of the inner mount?
If so, could it be possible that PTT has finally corrected their largest fitment issue?
That sure would be nice. |

Darrel the rear guards are fitting really good....its basically the front/left one that has to be corrected... 1 of 4....could have been worse
KGCoupe I just used the according rubber spacers. Nothing for show & shine but it worked without any problems. I just need to shorten the "screw":
....by the way...the Ghia is in the paint shop now

For not getting bored in the meantime we started to complete the pan.
First of all we took some time for the beam. Of course it would be much easier to order a brand new one that has been build up from new parts but if we would have wanted an easy project the Ghia is the wrong choice at all... 
Even if I wanted a narrowed beam I also wanted to keep the original look. Thats quite simple if you are narrowing the beam by maximum 2 inches but my plan was to realize 4".
So first of all we have separated all parts just to see whats possible...
..."unfortunately" 3,5" is the maximum if you want to keep the shocks straight...
We have shortened the tubes in the center to avoid the welding spots...
...and used an average plate on the inside in combination with the stock shock towers on the outside...
...further more we have integrated the seals into the tower...
But even with relocators we have been too far away...
...so the shock had to move closer to the inside of the car...
...its really close but it works  ...
This is the first "prototype" but I think we can try to get on the road with it.... |

Hey Guys...
...its time for the next update I guess.
The Ghia is still in the paint shop so we had the time to proceed with the pan.
First of all we started with the transmission but unfortunately the one we wanted to use had the modern mounting bracket/housing and the long axle. I could have used the early housing but I didn´t want to go without the switch for the reversing light so I ordered a new NOS part.
The mature problem were the "long" axles because even with the short axle it was so so close with the 5,5 ET15 Sprintstars (205/65R15) >> see next picture. Okay we had no engine in the car so it might have worked with some camber but not with the "long" axles...
...means...  short axle required!!
Now the rear end is finished so far except of some small details. These are the modern brackets with 40mm brake pads and stock 5x205 drums. We just had to cut the edges of the pads by 1mm to avoid dragging in the drums....
Furthermore I decided to go with 2" Limebug drop plates...
We also finished the beam so the front end is almost done as well.
The current setup is a 3,5" narrowed beam with CB dropped spindles, CSP Zero Offset Disc Brake with short KYB GR2 Shocks and relocators....:
...I am just waiting for two brake lines right now so the pan should be finished by the end of April. We expect the Ghia will be back from the paint shop in about 4 weeks so we are in the schedule.

Thanks Antoine!
I have discussed all modifications with a guy working for Dekra and he promissed that there is no problem as long as the car has a overall historical look ("zeitgenössisch") even if I use modern parts for the chassis.
In fact that the Ghia will not be slammed and I am mostly going to use "historical" parts on the "outside" its going to be fine. |

Good news... I had a call with the paintshop and they told me that the Ghia is completely prepared for the paint right now but they are going to store it another 4 weeks for outgasing. So its going to be painted by the end of August
Some last "pan-shots"...
...sitting on 145 / 165 Michelin XZX at the moment..
...why not to use a longboard wheel...
...to get the same look front & rear I just tried out some polished drum skins...I LIKE IT!

Yes I am still alive...
No unfortunately the Ghia is still not painted yet  ...WHY?...we discovered some areas with "bubbles" in the solder. Obviously the problem came from the flux so we had to remove everything from these spots for the rework ...
Anyway... if I cannot work on the car I have to take care about one of the most important things....WHEELS
