Hi all

Is it possible to replace Valve seals with the engine in the car / the cylinder head still on the engine?

I have compression of 150psi/10bar on 3 cylinders and 135/9.5 bat (approx.) on one cylinder. I get a grey smoke/oil smell from the exhaust and people have suggested that it could be valve seals (few dollars each).

Wasn't sure if it was possible to remove the rocker mech, and attach a tool to release the spring, then replace the seals?

Many thanks,
Paul

looks possible but not much room to work with. Not only do you need to remove the spring, you'll need to keep the valves closed. Rope down the spark plug hole will do that. The angle of the exhaust valve will make it difficult

You make an adapter from an old sparkplug to fit an air hose and put piston tdc ready to fire (so both valve are closed) and bring air pressure up to 100 lb.s and remove valve springs and R&R seals. You will need to figure out how to compress springs to remove keepers.

I don't recall my 356 Heads having valve stem seals! Sounds like a patch. But how would they help with compression? Usually, oil smoke from the 356 engines is caused by worn out cylinders and rings. Maybe STP would help.

I have a pair of 62 super 90 "Black Oxide Heads" and they have seals on the intake valves only as they are the only valves that see suction and prevents oil from being drawn into combustion chamber. There were only a few of the black heads put out by Porsche so it might be just them.
