Need to buy new pistons rings for my bus engine. I know there are many ring manufacturers out there.
- Any recommendations or ones to stay away from? Thanks |

Are the pistons in spec? How about the cylinders after being honed? Usually, (95%) of the time if the rings are worn out so are the pistons, cylinders etc.
Look into new set of pistons/cylinders _________________ 70 Ghia Black convert-9/69 build date-stock w/133k 1600 SP-barn find now with a rebuilt tranny and engine

I used TRW for 1800cc dual carb, worked well & came with 2 piece oil
control assembly (spring & one piece cage)
don't know if they are still available, it was a red white & mostly blue box. |

Are you doing a backyard build cheap and dirty, or are you building the motor to be as close to new as possible?
If you are doing a new as possible motor then take the pistons and cylinders (be sure to mark each in a way that it neither harms it or will wash/bead off) to a good local machine shop. Have them mic the pistons to be sure that the skirts haven't collapsed, and have them gauge the cylinders to be sure they are still straight. If they are straight see if they can do a very light hone on them. Before tossing the old rings check the ring land clearance on each land and piston in three of four places. If the ring lands are worn out then the pistons are done. When you buy new rings, compare the thickness of the rings because some rings are thicker than others and they will be to o tight in the ring lands unless they are worn. Also if the piston to skirt clearances are too great then the pistons are done too. Many times folks just buy a good Mahle set if they can to get away from all these potential issues. If this is a backyard cheap and dirty build you can have the cylinders bottle brushed and just toss any ole ring in there - most brands will work as long as you set the ring gap, and the land side gap is Ok. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |
