This horrible grinding/screeching sound happens in 1st gear, sometimes when you go from 1st to 2nd also. Doesn't happen at traffic lights, only when it's been standing/parked for a while. Drives fine otherwise.
Engine and transmission oils has been replaced. JX engine with 5 speed manual gearbox.

Thanks

1.) Is the clutch in or out during the grinding?
a.) If the clutch is out, are you feeling 'power' during the grinding?
2.) Are there two different positions for the gear shifter when shifting?
a.) If yes, when it transitions between the two, is that when the grinding
stops?

My initial impression is the syncro ring for 1/2 is dead/dying.
Check your xmsn oil again for particles/ pieces.
For your sake, I hope I am wrong.

1. Only happens when gear is engaged and accellerator is pressed, and it is relative to the rpms. Do feel normal power, doesn’t feel like a regular clutch ”slip”

2. Not sure I understand what you mean by ”2 different positions”? Grinding happens in gear only.

Will check the transmission fluid again. It was replaced less than 10k miles ago but there may be a leak because the gearbox is full of old oil on the outside.

2.) Shifting to 2nd, the shifter goes halfway, transmission grinds, shifter 'pops' into correct position and grinding stops.

"Happens in gear? Relative to engine RPM?"

I'm going to skip right over the syncro ring, and go right to the gear itself and the shaft bearing.
Check your oil. SOON. Look for particles. Set it in the sun, and look at it from different angles. Get a rare earth magnet and let it hang in there for a few hours.

Now's a good time for someone with more transmission knowledge than I to jump in here......

The trans needs to come out.
Than checking the sleeve from the shifting shaft for craks.
Not sure if it can be done with the trans in on a 2wd.
Also having a look into the first gear by removing the front housing.
Checking for pinion play and visible damaged parts.
Maybe a broken part from shiftingshaft bearing in the front hoousing.

Before you take big things apart, check your alternator & belt (tension & bearing) - possibly remove it for a very short test drive (will also disable water pump).

I suggest the alternator as it has to work hard for a spell right after start-up if the van has been sitting a while and the battery charge has run down a bit.

Probably not something so simple but one can hope.
