Have a 1972 Karman Ghia Convertible. Purchased car with new top. However, had it out yesterday and got caught in rain storm. Started leaking all around base of dashboard. No obvious drips from top of windshield. Seems to be running down inside and dripping onto floor etc. Left hand turns were fun... water ran down my left leg Smile. Thoughts on what could stop this?

Thanx

Replace the windshield rubber and hope the frame isn't rusted through.

Wink

Finding out that your car leaks when it rains really does suck because the water can quickly damage upholstery, carpet and worst of all the metal itself if the leak is left unchecked.
Perhaps even more so because you know that it will likely be difficult to isolate the exact entry point of the water.

Your initial description does indeed sound as if the leak may be in the windshield rubber.
Quite often, though, the water may be traveling some distance along some (possibly well hidden) interior surface before it actually puddles on the dashboard, seat, floor ... or your leg.

Hidden deep in The Samba Archives you can find the document that Volkswagen wrote BITD to help their technicians find and stop water leaks in Karmann Ghias,
Body Leaks - Karmann Ghia
Look, Listen, Do It Better Booklet No. 14
.

Undoubtedly yours is not the first Karmann Ghia to suffer from a water leak, so if you use the Ghia Forum Search feature you also may be able to find some helpful tips in previous individual threads such as this one ...
So how much water does your Karmann Ghia leak?

Best of luck finding that leak.

Could it be caused by a missing or rusted out Inner Door Hinge Pillar Cover? That plate that sets behind the front wheel and seals off the hinges and heater tunnel? Just a thought since I saw this wide open when mine was completely disassembled.

Here is my 1970 Convertible with the front glass removed.

This rust is minor but you can see it in the lower corner. On many vehicles with bad windshield rubber seals this metal will be totally rusted away.

Odds are high that your leak is seal related.... Bad rubber and / or rusted metal.

Image 14/15 shows why the rockers rot so badly, they actually designed the body so that water enters the box channel. Rolling Eyes This would be especially problematic in salty conditions.
