Like the title says, I lost my beloved Subie/Manx in a Cali wildfire.

Like most of you, I have countless hours into the build, and even though it's "just a toy" we put a lot of heart into our builds, and cherish the fun times with friend and families.

Now comes the "negotiation" with the insurance company on value, and my request for help from the Samba community.

I've already scoured the internet for COMP ads, but there are very few street legal, Subie powered (2.5 STI Turbo), mid-travel MANX Buggies for sale at any given time.

I've already checked Samba, Manx Club, Glamis Dunes, etc, but if anyone has a link to an old ad, bill of sale for a purchase, etc. Anything at all that would help establish market value, I would grateful for the assistance.

Thanks to all!

My rail was hit by a drunk and quite damaged. Good luck dealing with your own ins co. I ended up with 2 appraisals and a lawyer before I settled. Appraisers were licensed, bonded, and affiliated with a nationally recognized organization. The 2 appraisals came in 4k apart. Question New policy is for a agreed value.

When I bought the Manx, I signed up for a stated value policy through a Manx Club member who owned an insurance agency. We agreed upon a value. She retired (or passed away) and someone else bought the agency. As I improved my Manx over the years, I tried to up my stated value and switch to Hagerty, but they wouldn't take it based on a non-functioning odometer at the time.

Fast forward to the fire. I call the Insurance company I've had for 12 years (not they agency) and they say "you don't have a stated value policy"....you were misinformed by your original agent, she wrote up the application for the policy incorrectly.

So here we go...

If the company is throwing the agent/agency under the bus then you will have to chase the agent/agency through the agent's and/or agency's "errors and omissions" policy.
Of course you will then have to prove your claim of what type of policy you were told you had bought.
Good luck!

I have been through this "exact" situation with a building fire (lightning strike) and the agency also tossed the agent under the bus. Like you we were negotiating and they even told us to stop by and pick-up the final check.....uhhh, well, no, building security escorted me out of their lobby and I immediately contacted our attorney. He said, "Get ready for a pissing contest...I am guessing 2 years in and out of court and about $10000 in legal fees."
Bottom line....I couldn't afford to pursue it further.

Damn, nice buggy, too....I hope you can wring something out of them.... You are looking at the Insurance 3 Ds......

I was 1 mile from away a mandatory fire evacuation a few days ago. I looked around, and thought "Guess I will take the buggy, everything else is easier to replace."

We have wildfire really close to us right now..... Agree with taking irreplaceable things.... Some clothes, photo albums, genealogy records and a few treasures and important documents, and load buggy on trailer and wait.... Chairs, tables, beds, TV and almost all material things can be replaced....

Early preparedness is key.... IF you have time move buggy to friends or relative or storage facility in safe area long before threat is real....

Thanks for the comments.

I've evacuated for 3 fires in the last 12 years, and could see 3 more from my home that came within 10 miles. (Not easy to sleep when you can see a 80-100 ft flames from your bedroom...the flames look HUGE at night!)

We've gotten good at fire prep and evac. We always takes the Manx, and other irreplaceable items).

This fire was the worse possible scenario. It started in my neighborhood and went from ignition to firestorm in less than 15 minutes. I was not home at the time. My wife fled in her bare feet, with our dog in her arms. No time to pack the "go bag", no time for anything. She was lucky to get out unharmed, other neighbors were lucky to get out alive. A friend and I tried to get back to the house 20 minutes in...no way, just to0 hot and too much smoke and embers flying. It was 104 degrees with 50 MPH winds.

We retreated to a safe distance and saw the first strike team arrive. (8 engines, I think, plus a bulldozer) After a few minutes they retreated from our neighborhood (said it was too hot to fight) and pulled back a half mile to try to hold it from spreading to other neighborhoods.

Thanks to a lot of preparation and a lot of luck, my house was spared, but everything outside was lost. The heat was unbelievable. The fire chief said said he never saw it burn so hot and so close to a house that survived. My neighbors jeep just had silver puddles were the wheels used to be.

The Manx Subie engine melted. You can see the steel camshaft lying in the ruins, and the steel bands where tires used to be.
