|
|
I've just about finished running a new loom in my 72 bus but have a few remaining issues and question to clear up'
1. Back in the engine bay I have 3 wires which I am unsure about:
I am pretty sure that one is the oil pressure warning since this isn't yet wired up. Other than this the reversing lights do you yet work but everything else seems to have been wired in so I'm having real trouble identifying these wires. The grey wire is actually a grey/green but can't easily be seen in the photo. The white and black are two wires to one terminal
2. Where is the "ignition coil". According to the diagram the reversing switch runs tot eh ignition coil via an inline fuse. I'm not sure where or what this is. Can it be seen here:
3. On my dash pod if I put my warning signal lights on without the ignition key turn the green light do not flash but the alternator/generator warning light does (feigntly). If I turn the ignition the green lights flash as exepected without the alternator flashing too.
If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

The ignition coil is blue and has the maker's name on it: Bosch. _________________ My projects (so far):

You installed it, where did you connect the other ends to?

It's the blue cylinder on the upper left corner of the cooling shroud (middle of your pic), the backup lights are powered by terminal #15 (same one you put the black wire from the front on), the green wire from the distributor goes on terminal #1.

See what happens after you finally get the black wire on the ignition coil and choke, those lights need the resistance of the other things on that circuit to use as a ground path when the key is off. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Thanks for the identification of the ignition coil. My reversing lights are not working because the wire form the reversing switch to the coil has been cut. As I understand it the coil provides the live - so problem solved.
As for the black white - I need to trace forward to the wires up front. Before the install I tired to identify as many of the wires as I could and labelled them before starting the project. I am not sure why or how I missed these black/whites but it maybe a case of checking for continuity up front in order to figure this one out. I'm just struggling to workout what is missing.
I will report my findings! |

We are not going to be able to tell you where the wires go unless we know where the other end is connected to.
Take the blue wire. VW ran that from terminal 61 on the voltage regulator to the Generator light in the instrument cluster.
But who knows where you hooked the other end of the blue wire to? Only you.
Good luck

Ok so I figured out that the black wire is the 12v to my ignition coil from fuse 12. The white that is joined with it I think is for the test circuit (73 diagram).
Likewise the grey (with green) wire looks like it is for the text circuit and the blue/green is the oil pressure switch.
So the final question is where is my oil switch located? _________________ 1972 Type 2 1600cc

I think a '72 has the engine access panel above the engine, right?
If so, look down between #3 and #4 cylinders. There will be a hole in the tin, and a copper spade sticking out of something screwed into the block. That's the oil pressure switch.
(I tried looking for a pic in a Samba thread, but didn't have any luck. I hope my description helps.)
Those switches are notorious for leaking oil, so check to see if it's dry. If not, they're fairly cheap and super easy to replace. _________________ -Kent-

Unfortunately no access panel on a 72.

Looking at your photos I think you actually have a '71. Reason: I'm not seeing anything about that engine bay or rear of the Bus that has anything to do with 1972.
While Euro bays could be ordered with a 1600 upright to the end of production, the engine bay itself was identical to the Type 4 engine bay used from 1972-on and used adapter tin. I'm seeing no evidence of that.
What's your VIN number? Just curious. The mitigating factor here is that VW was known to use up old parts on Home Market cars so it really might be a '72, but what I'm seeing tells me that perhaps a '71 diagram might be more applicable, FWIW. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни!
