Hi there! I recently purchased a 59 panel that has a D0 (1969) engine. It came without a battery. It has been sitting for more than 30 years.
The question is how can i tell if it is a 6 or 12v?
The lamps on the taillights are 6v, the generator is a 180/6/2500 l3 6v
but the carb is a 30pict 1 with a 12v choke.
Any insight?

Which of those items is required to have the VW work, especially legally, and which can be left unconnected?

looks like you have a 6 volt car where the choke does not work well....

No problem asking most any question! We just prefer to help by pointing one in the correct direction, so one can understand the solution more completely.

Yes, this.

Someone may have stuck a carb on it at some point to get it going, not noticing it had a 12v choke or simply turning it so the choke never activated. It would run like crap when cold but maybe they didn't drive it in weather that was too cold so it wasn't a huge issue.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

As it's clearly Rolling Eyes seen here it it a 6v coil, so one more point to the 6volts!
thanks for the help!

Personally, I like 'em original, so if it were me in your shoes, I'd buy a brand new 6 volt battery (I think it's group 19 size?), start at the front of the Bus working my way towards the rear end and unplug each and every wire and connector and using a tiny wire wheel on a Dremel drill or simply finer sandpaper and fine steel wool I'd polish up each and every connection surface until shiny, then dab them in die-electric grease, then re-assemble them and then marvel at all the components working well again!

As an owner of two 1959 six volt Buses running original 36hp drivetrains, six volt and original ROCKS! With a later engine, your results may differ.
