Hi folks,
Can anyone please tell me the difference between these rear wheel cylinders.....
311-611-067B - 22.2 chassis 76 300 to 221 974
361-611-069B - 25.4 chassis numbers as above
361-611-067 - 23.8 chassis 221 975 to 483 592
Apart from the obvious bore differences is there anything else? Could any of these be used on any of the early chassis?
My car is listed as needing 361-611-067 but I'm having trouble finding a NOS pair Ate. Thanks for your input |
Hello from Germany,
Yes, there is an interesting difference, and therefore VIN 221974/975 is important:
You always have to combine the rear wheel cylinders with the correct anchor plates. Up to #221974 the mounting of the wheel cylinder is "down" at the anchor plate. From #221975 it is "up".
If you combine brake cylinders and anchor plates correct, the "bleeding nipple" (I am missing the correct expression in English language) is above the brake lining.
If you combine wrong, the "bleeding nipple" is below (!) the brake lining, where it does/might happen you do not get all the air out of the system. Not funny with a single brake circuit system.
In +30 years working on type 3 I have seen the wrong combination several times.
If it is not clear what I mean, I can scan the page of the spare parts catalogue with my marks on this issue, where one can see the difference!
Best Regards, Jörg. |

I know it won’t be correct, but my aluminum fan shroud is heavily pitted. The standard was to run them bare, but in this case it will look terrible. I am going to have it powder coated, and was thinking of utilizing the same grey as the intake, heater elbows and muffler. To me the colour looks very close to ASA61 grey, which is a standard on most electrical equipment. Anyone have any other suggestions? Also, does anyone repop the label on the air cleaner? |

I get my shrouds powder coated in a silver tone or have the blasted and then clear coat or run bare. I think Scott Taylor (t3kg) has the decals for the air cleaner. _________________ '68 Lotus White T34 automatic sunroof

Thank you for the info. Do not want to blast my air cleaner until I have the label.
As for the shroud, it is blasted and will need to be coated.

On a recent trip of 1000+ miles to pick up an NOS rear apron and hang out at the Bob Baker show in San Diego, 1500 club member Eric Hand offered to bring me a tool box he just picked up. While delivering it, 40 miles south of where he was staying, I asked if I could see the apron to see how far off the apron of the early notch I'm working on is. While comparing and taking pictures he offers to leave it with me. So grateful for the friends I have because of the car I drive. Thank Eric👍🏻

plug wires are too modern and shouldnt be 90 angle
black short coil, Bakelite matching the distributor cap patina would be preferred
not sure about the oil pressure switch, look modern as you have it.
I generally don't use hose clamps on the fuel lines but I don't think anyone will fault you for it _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

What is the date stamp on your air cleaner? Ive never seen an early type with the four linear depressions on the top like that? Im betting its from a later standard type of T3 like 68-73 ish.
Looks similar to a FI cleaner.

A 66 Standard.
Needles to say, Kneicht and Mann were the two primary manufactures of the filters. Australia may have a third? Or a licensed variation there of??

thanks for the replies and the pics.....
where is the date stamp on the oil bath ????
as far as im aware this is the original oil bath.
i also have some spares i will look at over the weekend for comparison.
i wasnt a fan of the blue coil so looks like some painting to be done there.
it doesnt have to be factory stock, just trying to get it not to look out of place.
i will post up some pics of the oil bathes _________________ 1965 Type 3 Panel Van

It looks great now brother. These pointed out details only .3% of the people at shows will notice. So no one
Date stamp is on the outer rim. _________________

One of the little tiny details lost to history is that originally early 1500 side draft engines got blue plug wires and S engines got red from the factory. Knowing the Germans, there were likely more internal differences than just the color but what those differences were is lost.
Blue and red wires went away around the time of the end of red needle gauges and push button dashes and all became black.
L-shaped connectors at the distributor cap became necessary in 1968 for fuel injected models only due to added distributor body height because of the D-Jet trigger points now affixed under the breaker plate. The L shaped connectors are ONLY correct for 1968-73 with fuel injection, even though everyone and their grandmother (including Bosch!) sells them as "Type 3 wires".
Also- original wire and plug brand was Beru if memory serves in the early days. Not sure when they became Bosch but I am thinking when they went to all black wires.
Now, if you'll kindly excuse me, I need to go geek out over my collection of pocket protectors. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

being an australian assembled CKD we ended up with all sorts of different stuff.
i dont ever recall seeing this with any other than black plug wires and no 90 bends....but in saying that the bends stop the plug wires rubbing through the foil on the underside of the engine lid and i can live with grey for the time being.
i would assume also that we got bosch plugs and wires as part of the local content rule at the time... thanks for all the info _________________ 1965 Type 3 Panel Van
