I just acquired what I think is a very nice 1974 Super Beetle that I think is the Sunbug version. It has a stuck motor, that I have not really tried to get unstuck as yet.
My question if anyone might know, is:
"What brand of tires would have been on this car originally?"
The odometer shows 31378 and the spare tire in the front looks like it has never been on the ground.
It is a Starfire Sport Metric in 165R15
here is a shot of the bug, I did clean of half of it just to see what it might look like I will get around to washing the other half someday.

I had what I believe was an original spare. It was bias ply. A Dunlop, if I remember correctly.
Looks like you have a nice find. There are few Sun Bugs. Welcome to the Sun Bug club.

Thanks folks for your replies, I have a long ways to go to get this thing where it will be a show stopper, but it is something to work with.
I knew I had the original owners manual with the car, but I found this morning that I also have the original window sticker as well, and it definitely is a Sun Bug. It came into Houston and was sold in Amarillo Texas.
I am supposedly the 3rd owner of this car. I am going to scan a copy of the title so I can have evidence of the owner that I bought it from.
I also am going to scan a copy of the Window Sticker just because it is a really neat item to have.
This car may have been a special edition car but it came without a radio in it, and since I do not listen to the radio anyway I am going to leave it without one. |

I have one as well.
I also have a question about the spare; did it come on a sport rim or a more common silver steel rim? |

That car would have had 6.00 inch x 15 bias ply tires . A lot of people had radial installed when new . There would be quite a few takeoff tires available . |

John7, in Facebook, go to the search at the top of the page. Type in VW Sun Bug Owners. Do it just like that. It should take you there.

Thanks
For the invite on facebook, but I do not do any social media stuff.
Posting on a forum once in a while is about the extent of my social stuff.
No Twitter, no instagram, no snapchat..........
I do like this Forum only because of the subject matter. but this is about as far as I am willing to go.

Wheeler, the FB Sunbug site is not a “social” site. The only items discussed are VW Beetles. Specifically, Sun Bugs. There is no gossip, no political crap, etc. Just photos and information regarding Sun Bugs.
I mentioned it because some Sun Bug owners want to keep their rides as original as possible. There are numerous photos showing many original Sun Bugs.

Hey Tim.
Unrelated to this thread.
But there's a thread in the Off Topic forum regarding the Redding fire.
A few of us have been wishing you well in the thread.

67, I’ll check it out. As of today, the fire is heading to the north, south, and west. Fortunately, we live in east Redding. The worst I’ve had to deal with so far is a lot of ash in my pool, as well as a warning of rolling blackouts. With a promise of 107 today, we really need the air-conditioning.
Not that I have anything to complain about, compared to many others.
So far, the fire has taken houses in rural and semi-rural areas—for the most part. We’re hoping for the best.
Thanks,

It was awesome that it came with the window sticker. It does not have the shifter knob, or any of the external Sun Bug emblems, but did come with a set of Sun Bug floor mats. They are really dirty, and one has a little hole in it. I am working on cleaning them up. Lots of work ahead.
I feel like this is going to be a money pit for a while. I am not sure that I am up to doing all the work that is going to be done, but maybe it will not be too bad. With all the support here I feel a little better at attempting at least a part of the work.
This is the first Beetle that I have owned. There may be better examples to start with but I am happy with the "74" At the time this car was getting into the US I was a 14 year old kid and spending a lot of time thinking about cars.
hopefully in the next 4 or 5 years I can have it done. |
