My Beetle engine is 1641cc (Dual Port) is using a Engle 110 camshaft, and the
compression ratio is set 8:2:1. Vintage Speed exhaust.

If I use a 91 Octane, the engine tends to splutter when I turn off the key.

I changed to 98 Octane, the engine splutter stopped. During Summer I get pinging or gurgling in the engine when its under load.

What else can I do to improve my engine performance?

Pinging is destructive and must be avoided

pinging, ie detonation, can be effected by octane, use a higher octane. also spark advance, retard the timing, also temperature, make sure cooling is working perfect, head temps are important for this so monitor head temperature, cool more as needed. mixture can also play a part, as that can effect temperature for example.

Bug On!

A C/R of 8.2:1 shouldn't require more than 91 octane fuel to run properly. Do you know if your octane rating system is the same as the (R+M)/2 method found here in the US?

As bluebus86 said, 'pinging' or 'knocking' can be caused by a number of things. Sometimes overlooked are additional factors such as altitude, or a build-up of combustion chamber deposits.

What type of carburetor(s) are you running? What size are the main and idle jets? What type of distributor do you have? What is your ignition timing set to...and do you set it static, or at full advance?

8.2:1 CR Premium pump gas should handle it nicely, Mine does and it's 8.3 or more. But I did experience the spluttering etc when shutdown with regular. Bet your engine has a little more CR than you think?

Supply timing, what carb and distributor and do you know what your jetting is?

Sounds like a timing issue to me, try retarding the timing

8.2CR is not very high

agree that 8.2 is not excessive. But depending on which one of our cars (various engine sizes, etc) I run mid grade or premium.
