There was a time when VW Buses in South Africa had reduction boxes on IRS. Somebody on here has a pair of the boxes. It was discussed within the last couple of months or so.

I can't see a significant advantage over 5.38 gears
I can't see operating CV joints a foot apart from each other. maybe if you ran 3X3 trailing arms, not on stock trailing arms
all you gave to do is seal up the bearing in the gear box, machine splines on axles, attach flanges to the axles, make your own remarkably short drive axles, find CVs that work at 60 degree angles - nothing to it.

The advantage would be the increased ground clearance without putting extra stress/angels into the CV joints like 3x3 arms would. The main issue besides trying to adapt the swing boxes to accept IRS stub axles would be flipping the R&P in the trans so you don't end up with 4 reverse speeds.  |

Yea I remember oogling after that for a bit. They were reduction boxes with U-Joints. Pretty cool looking at least.

I was thinking about trying to design my own redux boxes that used circle track "quick change" gears but they have to run on a 3 1/2" center line and that would not be much of a height gain. If I still ran the water jet machine from my last job I would try to do it, how about a 3 gear system, that would give about 6" of lift and you would not have to flip the ring gear in the transaxle.

Have you guys seen the chain rails?...vw powered that are driven by a chain....think of a off road bike style suspension setup. ..easy to change the gearing by just changing out the sprocket...mostly used in hill climbing events.

Yes it has been done. Somewhere I have pictures of a friend's Tow'd that has a setup someone else had made. They are laid down.
Gil George (FUNCO) use to make a set of side cover for a Bug Trans that had gears like a reduction boxes for being to change final drive ratios.

If you built a reduction box using two sprocket and a chain you would not have to flip the ring gear. I am going to think about this for awhile.

The VW Bus reduction box gears have a center line space of about 3" Less than what Quick Change gears would provide.

This could be done with a 002 or 091 also. But then you would want the gears to be 1:1 or inverted to reduce the final drive ratio.
Plus...The CV axle length would not be so terribly short Mal. Even with stock width trailing arms. The outboard CV location would be about the same place as it is with regular VW hubs, stub axles and arms.
