Thanks, I would have never known & I didn't put my name on the tag so they had no idea who's car it was. It was a great day & event, looking forward to next year.

I honestly just paid the $5 extra to park inside so I didn't have to walk to the parking lot. Thanks to everyone that remembered the shop & the car, I loved hearing the stories from those of you that I had a chance to talk to.

Congrats!! 👏🏽

I was browsing through some folders on my old laptop and came across some pics of this car, I scanned a bunch of old 35mm photo's when I started using a digital SLR back in the early 2000's. Enjoy.
Body that was donated for this project, an old neighbor had this sitting in his yard:

Current issue of Hot vw's Volkstock coverage, 2nd time this cars been in a magazine about 30 years apart.
Pulled the motor out over the weekend to fix some leaks and swap the transaxle, found a broken valve stem under one of the lash caps, add that to the list. Once i get the underside cleaned up I'll get some pics.

Time for a few upgrades

Engine and transaxle are out, I'm going to clean up the underneath and paint some of the rusty stuff (mounts, etc..), maybe some undercoating on the body to reduce noise, also scored some axle tubes, mine are hammered. Picked up a gearbox, 3.88 ring and pinion with stock 3rd and 4th gear ratios and welded hubs, HD side cover and superdiff. Since it's this far down I'm going reset the torsion bars (a little higher, maybe 1 spline on the inside), and add urethane grommets, I may switch the outers to Jaycee retainers later, we'll see how the urethane works.

Motors out so I pulled the heads off, having a valve job done and the exhaust valves & springs replaced. More to come, I'll keep you posted.

This should be good. Everything on this build is top notch. The paint has held up really well. It's funny how the car is experiencing life stages along side its owner. :p Enjoy the driveability of the new trans! Performance can be measured in many ways. I'm enjoying your posts. This car is a survivor from an era I can appreciate.

Thanks Buggeee, funny how the priorities of a 50 something are different than those of an 18 year old. While I did enjoy driving the cars as it was, much like I did when I was younger, I'd like to be able to cruise without always shifting at a zillion rpm. Should get to cleaning and reassembly sometime this weekend, need to make space in the garage to keep the wife happy.

Knocked out cleaning up the rusty mounts and painted them black, next on the list are the axle tubes & pressure washing the underside & Backing plates. I never noticed the emergency brake cable covers don't fit the pan, looks like the ones on there are designed to slide into something and the early pan needs them to slide over the tubes, guess it's a good time to fix that too. I'll post some pics once things get a little more interesting.

Managed to get the new gearbox in, also installed some adjustable spring plates. Just a few things to knock out before I put the motor back in, Only problem, no heads, mine are old and need a bunch of work. Found a set of 044’s 42 x 37.5, waiting for the shop to set up the springs and they’ll be good to go.

I saw your car at Volkstock and loved the preservation. Cool car, man!

I am just getting back into the VW scene and I am an AZ guy also. I hope to see it again at this year's Volkstock.

Thanks, I plan on being there. I have all of the parts to get it back together now I just need a couple of cooler days, this weather doesn't make working in the garage fun at all.

That's one of our challenges here in Phx. I don't want to work on my cars during the summer, but if i wait until it cools down, then i end up working on them during prime driving season.

Understatement! Very Happy I walked into my garage at 5am today. The stifling heat and humidity were overwhelming. The ole "but it's a dry heat in Arizona" during summer is a fallacy. Wink

Not fun times in the garage in Phoenix during July/August and half way through September.

I braved the heat and humidity for a few hours in the garage Sunday, put the new heads on and set the valves so the motor is ready to go back in, good news was I didn't need new pushrods even though I wouldn't mind switching the cromoly ones out for tapered aluminum to reduce noise. Shouldn't be long now.

A couple more hours in the garage last night, installed tin, finally cut the piece behind the crank pulley for full flow fitting, and installed my Gene Berg linkage. Got the motor off the bench and on the ground, I will try to stab it Wednesday night and maybe have a running driving car this weekend. I am also replacing both e brake cables, the clutch cable and my hard lines on the axle tubes for the rear brakes, the list keeps getting shorter.

QUESTION, How many of you guys run 3 or 4 puck clutch discs on the street? I had a solid center super disc in it but it felt soft, like it slipped when you jumped on it hard in first. The old gearbox was 4:37 with close 3rd & 4th and a mini spool, car would barely spin the tires (185/65 radials).
Motor is a 1915cc, counterweighted crank, 10:1, K8 with 1.4 rockers, 44 idf's, big valve 044 heads (42x37.5) and nitrous, new tranny is a swing axle with 3.88 r&p, super diff and race axles so I'm not super concerned with breaking anything or being short on power.

I had a 4 puck clutch disc with a hot 1835. I HHAAATTEEED it. I reinstalled a stock spring loaded clutch disk. It never slipped, even dropping the clutch and beating the hell out of it.

The temps are down in AZ but the humidity is up, I figured since it was 80 I’d brave the garage this morning. I tried to put the motor back in a couple of weeks ago and had nothing but problems so I left it on a jack hanging in the bell housing. It would’nt go that last inch or so, I pulled the clutch disk out and found I buggered up the splines, fixed those, slid it on and off the input shaft a few times and put it back together and into the car. Just need to bolt everything back on a little at at time. I’d post a pic but there’s not much to see, maybe a few as I bolt parts to it.

It’s alive once again. Managed to get some major garage time over the last couple of weeks, I can’t believe this took 6 months. While I had things apart I replaced / cleaned up some of the questionable work 20 year old's find acceptable, installed the proper emergency brake cables, for some reason it had later model ones with spacers, same with the clutch cable but I haven’t done that yet. Also replaced rear brake lines that must have been bent with pliers and a hammer, what a mess. I’ll get some more detailed pics at some point but for now here she is all washed, running and driving
